I can also be included in the "seeing the big one that got away" club, and I tell you that hurts even more.

I made a quick run to IBSP this morning and threw a bucktail teaser rig along the sod banks for a couple hours. I caught 3 modest shorts in the first hour and a half, then two IBSP-keepers and another short in 20 minutes. The wind was in my face, but it wasn't bad, and there were no flies at all.
I walked over the the beach before I went home to see what was going on. Nothing but skate, I was told. The water was about 15 degrees cooler than the bay, too.

Moco 6P-9P Out front with a west then NW wind, clear water and knee high swell with a dropping tide. I was on the fly and observed small schools of peanut bunker, I had no takers on several PB imitations and switched out to a white piggy fly and caught one at 17 inches that was spitting out partially digested mole crabs. Switched to the mole crab fly and caught two more at almost 18. All still swimming

Yesterday 6p-9p Moco outfront strong south wind at the top of high tide that slowly subsided on the drop. Spearing and mole crabs in the wash with many large cow nosed rays cruising on the outer sand bar. I was using casting gear and caught 8 short flat ones while trying to get past numerous 2 pound blues which were in and out of the surf. I was using a 1/2 ounce Kastmaster and teaser. Plastic would have been destroyed.

Was in. Rooklyn this afternoon and evening and had a hankering to get out but only an hour and a half to do it. Since the trip to Breezy Point could have taken that much time I went to a local pier with an amazing view but only had a beach rod that can’t handle more than 1 1/2 ounces. Tried some light top water for a while with no takers then a 1 oz metal that wasn’t getting down. Switched to a sabiki rig closer to shore and wouldn’t you know it caught six stripers in about 20 minutes along with 3 snappers. The stripers were all much less than a foot long. Been thinking about using snapper zappers and Sabiki types for a week now. Guess I should have started targeting my favorite fluke bait already

I found sabiki rigs on Amazon, 10 packs for like a buck a piece. They were the good ones, too, 30# test main line, built for salt water, I think. At that price I won't worry if I can't get the damn things nice and tidy and into their package after use.

I figured I could throw them into the surf or dangle them about anywhere and get something like bait to bite. I also bought some with little glow in the dark shrimp on the hooks. Maybe those will do it, too.

I use the Sabiki rigs with a 3/4 oz kastmaster at the hook when the Herring and snappers are in. I cut them in half and only use 3 hooks and that's more than I can handle when they're thick. I have a blast as Bay can testify. Note: you WILL lose hooks to the baby Yellow Eyes

Bass I cut them in half too sabiki rigs that is. The crazy Japanese herring rigs with like 12 hooks that are really the best bang for your buck because the whole set up is quality from the hooks to the knots I get 3 or four rigs. Tonight was another case of not having the gear for the job but still having fun. Hit the beach in SoMoCo about 7 and after a quick swim in warm water even with a south breeze threw out a 3/4 oz white buctail with a cut down pink otter tail. Caught two preschool fluke quick then walked a bit with just the bucktail and my rod to catch one more little one but watch some sort of speedsters ripping around right off the lip outside the wash. They didn’t want my bucktail as fast as I could bring it in but saw someone catching something glossy a bit sloth of me.
