Squid...Squid....Squid...

I have an old timer in my ear.......who fished down south in the Carolina's in the 70's and 80's who says squid might work better than claims. (she is 83 hence the old timer)......any thoughts on the use of squid in NJ. I have read a good amount of posts from the last 5 years I didn't see to much about squid.

It makes sense to me. I believe that at least in the waters of New Jersey, that squid are the saltwater equivalent to the earthworm in freshwater. The most versatile natural bait there is with most species willing to eat it.

Yeah, they're tasty, but you'll find that everything eats it, maybe moreso than clams.

Also, it looked like you were trying to call them like piggies, which won't work - ever!

Never tried them for Stripers, but the flatties go for them bigtime. Might be worth a try

I believe stripes are AKA "squid hounds", that's gotta say something right there ;)

As far as dead or pieces of squid being "better" then clams, who knows , maybe different situations call for one or the other :dunno:

Re: Squid...Squid....Squid...

I was fishing with my friend a last weekend. I was using lures and convinced him to do the same. After an hour with no luck, he opens up a pack of squid he got from the Asian market on the way down to the beach. I thought he was wasting his time but didn't say much about his new approach. He rigged up a high low and within 25 minutes he set into a 24 inch bass. I would have rigged clams, bloods, or bunker before squid but shows how much I know. I guess it works better than I thought :dunno:

It's true, I think that you can get squid in a frozen block package any time, especially if you have a sense of where your local Asian market is to be found.

Maybe your friend has a wonderful new idea for a backup bait.

I still think clams have a lot going for them as a local delicacy for passing stripers.

the problem is, as noted, that doggies and skates love squid too

I wouldn't bother even trying to use squid for Striper bait, as Bill said you will catch mostly Skate, Sharks, crabs and other junk fish. Fresh squid can be useful for fluke though but for stripers stick to clams.
