Default Asbury Park - coolest town in America!

Asbury Park named 'coolest small town' in America

Asbury Park has made great strides in rebuilding itself in the last decade. Now the effort is underway to replicate the effort in the predominantly African American west side. Ryan Ross

ASBURY PARK, N.J. ? Budget Travel magazine recently named Asbury Park the "coolest small town" in America.
"We love Asbury Park?s cultural diversity, welcoming vibe, and year-round calendar of events: Fourth of July fireworks, Oysterfest, Zombie Walk, and so much more," the magazine said, in an article posted on its website.
"It's one heck of a recognition," said Asbury Park Mayor John Moor, who said his great-grandfather first moved to the shore community in 1888.
"It's a community-wide-recognition and really a great choice," Moor said. "It's really the residents, the businesses, everyone that made this happen."
More than a million visitors came to Asbury Park last year, according to the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce. The city has a population of just under 16,000.
It is about 1.6 square miles.
"I'm not surprised Asbury Park is getting noticed as a progressive, diverse and cultural city. Locals already know we are the coolest town in America," said Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn.
Asbury Park ranked above destinations like Bisbee, Ariz., and Nevada City, Calif.

There is a pretty nice section downtown... very crowded with metros and hipsters.

Loft apartments etc.

Parts of the town are still a dangerous dump, but the swath along most of the beach has improved a lot.

edit: and note it is a "cool" town, not necessarily "up scale" or "nice" by other standards... this is NJ after all

Frank,

You and I wouldn't "fit in" there anyways.

I have 2 daughters living in Asbury Park (at the moment, one will most likely be somewhere within a 1/2 hr of the MD eastern shore by later this summer, the other likes her beach block appt there in AP too much to leave)

But yeah, don't go. Seriously.

After living in Ocean County for more then 50 years the last few times I was in that town was for a Fishing flea-market in the middle of the winter.
Before that it was for a concert back in the day. "Bachman?Turner Overdrive".

Last time I drove through Asbury Park I was behind a black truck that suddenly pulled over. The back doors burst open and about 6 law enforcement officers in all black, full body armor, helmets and automatic weapons poured out.

Haven't been back since.

Nowadays, that can happen anywhere.

Even in DC.

I go to Asbury Park once in a while.
The boardwalk is a pretty cool place these days but I agree much
of the town is still pretty crappy.

True, but when folks talk about Asbury Park being cool, they really are discussing the new downtown / boardwalk areas, for sure.

In NYC you now have to watch out for Elmo and the gang when walking around Times Square, so every city has its places to avoid
