Default Montauk Or Ri?

Hey Frank,

I have the opportunity to go away this weekend. I'm thinking Montauk or RI. What do you think? Where are the hotspots right now?

Thanks,
Jeff

Also, I hear you need waders to effectively fish Montauk. I do not have waders. Is this true? Are there any places that rent out waders?

I say you need waders for both. I never heard of them being rented. You can buy waders pretty cheap. Just don't get the fancy breathables. I bought a pair about six years ago that were $30 and I am still using them for backup and often just grab them and leave my neoprenes on the hook because the neoprenes are too warm. As for which spot, I would choose the one nearest to home.

You definitely want waders for Montauk. And if you fish the rocky areas, you need Korkers too. I don't recall ever hearing about waders being rented either. But then again I've never asked. Rented waders probably smell funny.

You can call around and ask. Montauk is a very popular location for the summer tourist crowd. They just might rent poles and stuff for the people that want to try surfcasting and see what it's about. Fly fishing stores in places like upstate N.Y. and VT. rent waders and fly tackle..so it's a valid question.

Montauk is having a good fall. It was always a hostile place to fish. Be careful.

Montauk is hardly a secret. However, just look at the map and notice how the sea collides at the tip of Long Island and it is a no-brainer. If you are a current freak like I am, you could get horsed about Montauk.

If I lived in Ct. I'd be inclined to go to RI...you're pretty close right? Good beaches, breachways and backbays.
As for waders? I used to think waders were an extravagance, but inexpensive ($60ish) cost less than alot of sneakers and last a few years if you hang 'em up. I prefer boot-foot waders...they're simpler and don't get sand in between the outer shoe and wader the way stocking-foot waders do. I have a pair of neoprene waders, but the simple non-insulated ones are fine if you wear enough layers underneath.

That is why I told him to choose the one closest to his home. Things are going to crack open very soon at both places.

I've never fished MOntauk but I suspect that the number of stripers per yard of shore is higher than any other stretch of the striper coast. I guess there are large numbers of surfmen but that can be handled. Just yield to any aggressive behaviour.

At Montauk, if you can walk away from the early season blitzes and do you own thing you can score big ( with one one around).

With evrybody sport fishing, what is the point in aggressive behaviour? You going to wear a $200 wet suit tht takes 20 minutes to put on so you can take two fish or release fish all night? My wife has it right: she picks out a soft rock half the time and goes to sleep.
