Default Surfcasters Journal ?

There is a fairly new on-line publication called the Surfcaster's Journal. Anybody seen it? If so, what do you think?

I used to read it when it was free but no more, half the pages are advertisements - nice stuff but I can get the same info for free elsewhere.

This is something that I'm sure that you've dealt with, Frank, but I don't know that surfcasting is a large enough subject to justify a bimonthly magazine. After a while, usually a pretty quick while, the stories tend to repeat themselves, and get repetitive. How many times can you write about fishing lures before the stuff gets redundant? I too read Surfcasters Journal when it came out, and I admire the passion that Zeno Hromin and his co-conspirators have for the sport, but I paid attention to it in a long time.

Agreed, for some reason even when it was free I didn't consistently read SCJ. I tend to like On The Water digital edition better as its more well rounded.

I also like that other Saltwater journal/online mag from one of the other Striper forums, relevant info for our waters and always has at least one segment on surfcasting.

I do subscribe and I do like it. A lot of content is available on Z's blog before and after each issues release, so I'm not sure the subscription cost is worth it. I even posted in the Fly Fishing Forum about your article but no one noticed

When it first came out, just when Bentsen died, I did a couple of articles for Zeno. I hope his "Journal" is a great success! I just don't have the time to sit in front of a computer and read fish stuff for the required amount of time to justify it, even if it was free. If I did have the time the cost should be no barrier as I spend far more on magazines that I can read when I'm in bed, before going to sleep. That seems to be the only time I have to read such things.
As far as the quality of material goes, I believe Zeno is getting great material and paying well for it. If I had the time I would love to contribute more but I can't even fill obligations to "The Fisherman" or anything else so how can I put even more on my plate?
Everyone is different and the newer you are to surfcasting, the more important a publication like The SCJ can be. It, and things like OTW and "The Fisherman" can shorten your learning curve by many years as today the articles seem to hold nothing back. Material I wrote early on (in the 1970's) about surfcasting was vague at best and sometimes, intentionally misleading. I don't see that in any publication, on line or in print today.......JC

I enjoyed SJ for a short while, then when it was no longer free I forgot about it. Like many others I have reached the point where I have read it all, there just isn't too much new. I still read forums, The Fisherman and OTW but I am really drawn to the history of surf fishing.

If your a young surf fisherman, this must be a glorious era. So much information (good and bad) at your fingertips. Reading isn't actually doing, but years of trial and error can be avoided by careful study of the sport. Geez, back in our day you had to take your uncle's word on how to fish!

I looked at it a few times, Frank but I no longer fish north of S. Carolina and this is the only web site I relate to and yours is the forum I like best.

I always felt that too much product and ads were being pushed on the reader.

I can't take an article seriously and trust the author when the products being written about have multiple full page ads in the same publication.

I learned a lot more from his book.

It is not reasonable to complain about advertising. Were it not for ads, all publications would either fold or charge a lot more for subs. I enjoy reading the ads and in threads like this one others have also said that

It surprises me that there is not more excitement here for SJ. They are one of the few publications that is devoted entirely to surfcasting. I go right past trout in the Catskills or pout in the ponds. People who come here are surfcasters and SJ is surf. What more could you want?

i don't have the experience you all have but I like it.. It is more local for me.. I don't pay for it or read it very often.. I get updates now and again and I like it cause as jason, I think , said if your new to fishing the beach... I don't get enough. It is not deep enough for me. I like the ads too cause I don't know anything about products. It is nice to get ideas and day dream a little.. It is not a big amount of time.. quick read.

I have enjoyed the journal and don't mind paying for it. In regard to advertising every form of media has advertising. After all nothing is for free not in this world.

I think the SJ is in the early stages of development in a new medium. On-line publications are a natural development in the overall workings of things. I was distressed by the mention, and I know I did it too, of so many of us dropping it once we had to pay for it.

Just read that Alberto will be joining on as a columlnist for them. I don't think he is going to write about trolling for snakeheads, do you?
