Default Subaru Forester on the beach..?

Anyone know how the new ones will handle in the sand? They have an 8.7" ground clearance.

Like any SUV, that 8.7 is when you hit the frame unlike a 4x4 truck where as your lowest point is the axle. {not the frame}

As for the operation of the 4x4 it's self there suppose to be very good from what I hear.

Also keep in mind 8.7 is before you air down.

Mike

I had two Subaru's....a 1987 Wagon with air adjustable shocks and a 1999 Outback Wagon. Never took either on beach but used BOTH exploring all the sand trails down here in the Pines. Had a few scary instances with "sugar sand" but using common sense and easing through, I NEVER had to use my shovel.

I also asked that same beach question on the AWD Subaru and never got a definitive answer so I balked and traded it for my 02 Explorer. Now I'm in an 09 Liberty.

Good luck with the ride......You will also love it in the snow up there.

Thanks Bob, not sure if I'll get a chance before the end of the year to try it out. It's good too known Jess will be there just in case I have a problem.

We decided it was time for some new vehicles since I have over 325k on the 95 Camry and with the wife's 01 Pathfinder we have over 540k miles. If I drive the Forester as long as I did the Camry this will probably be my last vehicle.

if you're getting a new outback and actually do use it on the sand, please post a report.

not necessarily for me, but am starting the look for a replacement for my wife's ford escape, and in the process looking for something that is "sand capable" if not necessarily ideal.

here's a real video of a forester on hatteras.

This was our first experience with driving the 2012 Subaru Forester AWD, 2.5 L on the deep sand of Hatteras Island, NC. We "aired down" (reduced the tire pressure) to 18 psi as is recommended to keep from getting stuck when the sand is deep and soft. There is a segment at the end of this video of a stuck vehicle whose driver failed to air down. Once he did and was pulled out, he proceeded fine.

Thanks Rob, I'm going to start looking for a front receiver for a cooler and rod holder.

Why would they cut off before showing the stuck vehcile actuall being pulled out, to show THE ENZD for 25 seconds? If the enjoyed that Beach Boy song so much they could have played it over the clip.

I have seen a few of the older more "station wagon" looking ones on the beach and unlike those RAV4 type trucks never seen one stuck. I just want to document it, you know just in case......

Heres a older Outback on IBSP, think they still have the same AWD system, the sand does look its as firm as it gets in the park. BTW I never knew you got better traction driving in 1st & 2nd gear
