Default South Monomoy, South Beach Joined

I got this email from a friend today. I guess we all knew it was coming.

"Well, I had one of those milestone moments today: I walked from the
tip of South Beach across to South Monomoy - and was never in more
than 3-4 inches of water, and it was less than an hour before high
tide! Were it not for the heavy surf in the wake of the last storm,
it probably would have been a dry walk. The connection is complete,
though time will tell if it's permanent.

So, who wants to be the first to walk from Chatham Light to Monomoy Light?'

That sounds fantastic.
But need I remind you the beaches are putting on their "winter face"
Everything always looks good now.
All we need is one big blow to ruin it all again.
Nothing would make me happier than to see that little piece of land
come back again.
I would love to be the first one to make that walk.
Let me know how it looks Bill after the first Nor'easter.

It's the nor'easters that are closing it up. We all noticed it three years ago and it has been getting narrower and narrower and shallower and shallower for the past three seasons. My friend walked it after the last storm and it was at least 3' shallower than the after the storm before that.

What might revers it is a series of BIG southeast storms but they are few and far between in these quarters.

Default Only One Monomoy Island now

Well, we have only one Monomoy Island right now and South Beach is about five miles longer than it was day before Thanksgiving

Red Clark and I took the long walk from the lighthouse early this morning in the drizzle, rain and wind. I'm no geologist but, IMHO that new landbridge is here to stay for a while. But then, nothing stays the same along the outer Cape. But we made it to where the Southway used to begin(or end) and on over to what used to be South Monomoy. Now we have a much larger South Beach and only one Monomoy Island.

On the way back, we walked along what used to be the east side of the Southway. I must say that that narrow spit of land is much narrower in the vicinity of the "Tub" than it was last time I was on the beach. There were definite signs of washovers from the Chatham Cut in that area, just as there were last Winter.

That is such a volatile area that undoubtedly there are more changes in store this winter or next or, maybe, the one after that.

The Cape Codder is not on line yet but check out today's edition for some great pictures of the area.

I guess time will tell, Joe. My guess is that there will still be some excellent flats fishing on the west side but we will loose some good fishing that we used to have in the Southway between South beach and North Monomoy Island.

It's was the Thanksgiving noreaster that closed it up, Nance and we've had another since then that filled it in even more.
