Default A FIOS update

3 months, not one issue except that I found out I can expense my internet connection since I use it at home for work...

oh and this is still the case.....being at the bottom isn't always a bad thing...

Bandwidth calculation is measured against that of CNET's Internet Services. Bandwidth may be higher or lower depending on Internet congestion. Calculated tests do not reflect server reliability and speed.

Yep, I said it a long time ago. FIOS is the $hit. I can't wait till it's available by me. I don't want the old DSL, I want the fiber. These folks have me insanely busy on my job.

Frank,

Do you work for a company or are you independent?

Just curious about the "expensing" part

U.S. Net access not all that speedy.

The USA trails other industrialized nations in high-speed Internet access and may never catch up unless quick action is taken by public-policymakers, a report commissioned by the Communications Workers of America warns.
The median U.S. download speed now is 1.97 megabits per second ? a fraction of the 61 megabits per second enjoyed by consumers in Japan, says the report released Monday. Other speedy countries include South Korea (median 45 megabits), France (17 megabits) and Canada (7 megabits).

Cool Re: A FIOS update

That's actually old news, the US has been well behind for several years. The problem is not "infrastructure" it's greed. The cable monopolies want to maintain their exorbitant price structure.

By comparison our friends in Holland just got a new service package which features a 240 channels (including HD - Digital), internet download speed of 20Mbps AND free telephone service. $50.00 per month!

For the same package my cable provider would charge me $191.60 plus fed and state taxes and fees and the max download speed is only 50%, 10 Mbps. Of course I would get HBO and they don't but then again they get a few free porno channels.

Because of the system we use for cable networks, each town negotiates, I don't think the cable companies are going cut their prices because of Verizon's FIOS. Besides Verizon really doesn't want the cable prices to drop, they want them stable so they can maintain a premium price.

BTW: There is no such thing as price fixing in the United States - that's why all the oil companies have very different gas prices.

Came home today and the Verizon truck was up the block laying the fiber down the block. Called up, being installed on Monday.
Call or punch your # in on the website or call to see if you can get it was told if you you signed up to be notified when its avalible in your area may take 3 months after it is. 20 down -5 up MBPS (another $15 if you want 20 up), HD DVR Media center (other TV's in the house can watch shows from the DVR remotly) another 4 set tops (after I pick up and install 2 more instead of paying $40 to install the other 2) HBO group and some other movie package that has 46 chanels and Phone service will come out to $168 a month for 2 years. Paying $172 for digital cabel and internet now, have just had a cell phone since I moved here 2+ years ago, but it was like $45 then. You can hagel with them a bit on the phone.
I don't know why I'm so excited about the TV stuff other then Sports the Discovery & History chanels I really don't watch that much TV Hope I don't veg out more.
Now I need to find time to hit the beach.

for tv you have 3 choices in many places: verizon, cable, and satellite.

for phone it is similar: cell, landline and VOIP

for internet, without FIOS you are basically stuck with cable, unless you go to WIFI/cell

FIOS will change the landscape by really offering a bundled alternative. Yes, they want the price to stay high, but as more folks move away from cable, there will be a competitive price drop, if nothing else there will be a stabilization of prices with better bundle offers.

Add one more player to the mix for all 3 and it will get real interesting

Tell me more about FIOS.
Did you get the package, internet, TV and phone?
How does the TV work? One or mutiple TV.

I am thinking of making the change but it may mean upgarde PC OS.
