Ookla speedtest on Pioneer Broadband, server from Houlton, Maine

58.21 down 21.33 up ping 22ms

This is far faster than I ever had on Comcast in MA. Previously had Hughesnet here which was nearly useless.

This area was a part of the the nationwide government subsidized program for fiber optic coverage. Thank you Obozo, this is about the only positive thing you have done for me.

Fiber optic covers internet and phone. TV is satellite. Both are reliable. Technology arrives in the outback.

Joe, I hope so.

BTW you're Avatar makes me think of Men In Black

ST, that's great performance for the sticks

Comcast is a hybrid fiber coax network, fiber backbones, coax to the residence, and with improved modems, basically can be the same as all fiber to the residence for practical purposes. Problem many face is older infrastructure that Comcast hasn't yet upgraded. Probably the single biggest source of our complaints... just due to sheer size of what is called "the outside plant" in telecom vernacular.

Block declined to specify his reasons, and patiently repeated his request to cancel the service.
Several times the agent said "I'm just trying to understand," although Block's statements were clearly understandable.
"It sounds like you don't want to go over this information with me," the CSR says representative.
"I am declining to state why we are leaving Comcast, because I don't owe you an explanation," Block said patiently.
"We are the number one provider of Internet and TV service in the entire country," continues the rep. "Why is that you're not wanting to have the number one service?"
"I'm just trying to figure out what it is about Comcast service that you're not liking, and not wanting to keep," states the agent.
Block asked the representative to simply cancel the service, but the agent countered with "I'm just trying to help you."

Today I get an email saying they just made my Modem/Router a WiFi hot spot..
I was wondering when they would do that.

Jess, you can "disconnect" that feature. I think it's a bit involved but their website probably has instructions.

Think about it, you're paying them to access the internet plus the cost of electricity to run the Modem/Router so they can establish a totally free WiFi service spot for the public. It's like buying a car and automatically allowing other people to use it whenever - AND you pay for the gas!

I wonder when we'll be reading that criminals have discovered a way to hack into the modems and then into your computer. Bet the NSA already figured it out. Correction, I bet Comcast already provided instructions to the NSA.

The WiFi signal here is so weak that we can't connect just by being parked in the street in front of our home. "my Router is kept near the back of the house"
There is nothing but woods behind me and the neighbors on either side of me don't even own a cell phone not along a computer.

Comcast says they don't put residential hot spots on the maps for privacy which is a good thing IMO.
The hot spot is more for any company I may have so I don't have to give out our private pass code.

And yes I can control it from my account. It's in the same area where you can check your data use for the month..

I also noticed the IP is different when using the hot spot WiFi apposed to my private WiFi.
And of course as you know nothing is secure anymore.
