Having just read all the fresher posts, I come away with seeing a lot of hostility, inattention to protocols, and preoccupation with the politics of striper management. It causes me to wonder how many surfcasters who come here to be informed and entertained left today to shoot rats at the dump on their day off.

We have begun to drift away from the mandate of our existance -- surfcasting for stripers.

"Our purpose here is to inform and entertain on the subject of surfcasting for striped bass. We want members and guests to enjoy themselves and learn more about fishing from shore. We welcome contributions from people who speak truthfully about their own experiences and freely express any elaboration in a positive and constructive way. Disagreement, while it is sometimes necessary, should be approached as delicately as possible. It is not my intension to overly formalize posts but silly, unproductive remarks, overt contrarianism, especially if overdone, muddy our purpose. I love to see a lot of posts but I think adding to a thread's impetus is more important than seeking its derailment. When I'm confronted with a subject over which I know nothing about, I am forced because of protocols to say so. Otherwise I would let it ride for someone who does. Also, try to post in a way that encourages follow up. It is cheap entertainment, easy to manage, and downright addictive. Let's foster a continuation of our mission and keep it a nice place to visit."

I think that the format is great, as long as you have the time and energy to kick off each thread with a response.
Occasionally I have a thread idea that isn't a question to you that I would like to discuss with the regulars here, who I agree are a good bunch with a lot of knowledge. Perhaps a sub forum for this?
I think that if you changed to a more "popular" format, you'd risk losing some or all of the things that are good here.

This is pretty much standard on any Internet forum or social/comment section. I try not to get into arguments, but rather make my point as well as possible on the first try, and then turn it free and see what happens.
If you read many forums, you will see that this one is very civilized and respectful in comparison to many.

Thanks, LKB, I take that as a complement. But you should have been here 13 years ago before toilet training, when I first signed on. Stripersurf.con is the Sisters of the Holy Cross by comparison to the then.

I learned a long time ago that when something does something to you it is happening with others. Checking posts today, I get the feeling that we are losing our connection with fishing the striper surf. We have become all politics, striper fears, and hidden agendas. I think it unhealthy and counter to our mandate. It distresses me when I can no longer look forward to coming here when I know that has to be happening with others.

I'm sure it must be me, but I am a little bewildered by the addition of the Stripers Forever rant over Maryland's abuse of D-J Funds distribution. When I posted on it here the post came up on anothr forum. I was dismayed by but another striper management/preservation thread. Now we have voodoo consequences occurring!

Aside from that post not meeting the protocols for this forum, it should be in the "Commercial,Recreational Policy Forum'

Frank,
That post was moved to the commecial/recreational etc forum by Bob D. He sent a note to Jason and myself explaining why it was moved, and it made sense. Didn't belong in this forum, thus he moved it to a nore appropriate place.

Welll, on my days off I either go fishing or at least clean up the tackle and dream about the next time. Actually do way too much dreaming about it at work too. I feel a little nervous posting here as a beginner, but this topic I can talk about a bit - the threads Ive read are always helpful for me, even the occassional disagreements about the striper population, management, etc... lead me to think about my own fishing, should I be fishing differently, C&R, and how does my fishing behaviour affect others... (thats a stretch, its not like Ive put a dent in the fishery to date...)

all in all, this is a great site IMHO, and as was said previously, the archives have a wealth of information, to the point that someone new like me might think, what could I possibly ask that hasnt been asked already?

Even if you think it has been covered before, ask it anyway. Often related threads are listed when your question is posted and you can have the answer in front of you. All of us make mistakes so it doesn't hurt anything. Do read the protocols so you get a feel for the way we operate. There are subtle differences from many other forums.

I have my computer crash and am having trouble with the new rig so I may be a little off until I get used to this new rig. Please be patient.

Glad to hear it's just your computer. I was starting to get worried about you. Be back soon.
