All good companies. Its in their best interest to have a reputation for good products. Everybody is out to get these big companies. Remington Arms is in receivership. Consumers forget that many manufactured products are needed in society.

A basic Marketing 101 principle. Product is "needed" or at least perceived to be. The former being the pre-1970's rule and the latter post 70's, instant gratification era.

The public is fickle and often misdirects its hostility toward manufacturers. They impose lawsuits on manufacturers who are not responsible for what happens. You get some screwball who shoots a bunch of kids then blows his own brains out and parents bring a legal action to the gun company. I know of a situation where a guy drowned himself fishing and his estate sued the wader company .... and actually won. Next some guy will get a fish hook in his hand and they will bring an action against Mustad for making sharp hooks. Can't think of a suitable surf rod example, but then again, I am not a lawyer.

Other than fly rods, I have no experience with big box production surf rods. They always made crap and I always had access to custom rod makers. My surf rods had a big collector guide, one piece no ferrule, controlled length, suitable action for a heavy lure choice. (I have broken two surf rods in my life throwing the Giant Pikie Minnow.)

One of the advantages to the modern and not so modern ( fiberglass ) 11 ft rods. Throwing those big old plugs, eels and the like is a lot easier with the longer rod.

Not so sure about that. I outcast people all my life with shorter rods than they used; mostly it was because they did not cast with a long enough trail. Remarks here, and you are not the first, assume that the longer the rod the longer the cast. Ron Arra uses a long rod but he is a very big man. Put a long stick in the hands of a small guy and you have poor results.

Hey Frank, just dropped in to say hello. Hope all is well.

All the best...soon the fish return.

I hear you but I believe in what I see. Did meet Ron once, and yes he's a big strong guy. Most of those guys who can really launch it are big, thick body guys. In the UK they make a big deal about distance casting, competitions etc. Big thick powerful guys with 12' rods and heavy loads. The distances are equivalent to the goofballs using potato cannons to launch baits.

I once fished with the UK Distance casting champ, Dave Dowcra, and he was not a big guy but he did use a long trail when casting but those guys don't really use fishing tackle; they use casting tackler; there is a difference. point here is that you have to know the difference. Frankly, I can't get excited about distance as distance is way overrated. Certainly, there are situations where you have to cast far, but not all that many.

I have only caught one big bass on the end of a long cast. So I would have to agree. There is a magazine published in the UK. I think it's called Sea Fishing. Having spent some time over there with nothing else to read about fishing on the local news stand I bought a copy. They happened to have a recent results article on what was supposed to be the championships of long distance casting. Also shown were the records. I can't quote those numbers ( age related ) but I do remember that they were north of 250 yards. Rods were long, powerful and weighted with something like 7 or 8 oz. It would get very tiring throwing equipment like that in the night for even a few hours, no matter what size or shape you were in.
