Baseball was almost "sacred" back then, Bob. Not any longer. Remember, this is the sport that celebrated a homerun race between two drug users.

They didn't give Aaron an asterisk, so why start now.

Rob...there was no intent to injure; the intent was to go at the player hard and high with no intent to go at the base...he already thought he was out and he did not scramble back to the base after the collision; my point on the injury was that if it was incidental to going for the bag there would be little liklihood of that injury; watch it and its clear that Utley's intent was to go right at Tejadas legs and the injury adds to the story...not incidental contact but intentional hard contact; he should have been called out for that; no double play but called out

so what's the difference between this week's slide and the EXACT same "slide" Utley did against Tejada before?

http://m.mlb.com/video/v12416779

answer: none, except this time Tejada was planted and injured.

Utley should have been called out for interference, the umpires blew it.

I still don't see the suspension, though. Utley didn't do anything dirty or outside the normal confines of major league baseball.

I seem to remember some discussion about this, and Kershaw or someone actually said they felt better on short rest. Hmmm, now that I think of it, might have been Arrietta that said that... LOL

It'll be interesting to see how he does... I think Mattingly was wrong for pulling Kershaw ... he was just reacting to pressure he received from the previous Kershaw playoff meltdown

I think the game gets decided in innings 5-8; Mets need to get Kershaws pitch count up and Matz needs to be what he has been in every start but one

Pretty certain that if the dodgers don't make it to the world series that Mattingly gets fired.

As much as I like Don, I hate the dodgers... go Mets

on the first slide Tejada was on the bag and Utley went to the bag which is his job; current one he thought he was out and went for the player not the bag; his slide starts right at Tejada because that was his intent;

not what I see *at all* except for the fact that Tejada was on the bag and Utley went to take *him* out

c'mon.. don't change the play to fit the narrative.

Utley (and other hard nose players) have been taking out fielders since baseball's inception.

All of a sudden, your guy gets hurt and you justify the suspension

one more comparison of views. yes a little more space in the philly collision, but the overall intent was the same... take out Tejada. Period.

and he starts his slide past the bag...look at his knees; look where he is sliding, not at the bag; my take is in slide one he goes for the bag and its OK; slide 2 his interest is hitting the player and its that intent that says a little dirty..that is a football block; remember, he thought he was already out;

and on the NFL; they lose 26 seconds and the Steelers win on a last second comeback TD; talk about a need for a "do over"

I give up... If you ask an umpire, well they tried that already

I mean he's trying to take out the fielder, that's the whole point, and having that arm out by definition
Means he's going for the bag.

Interference? I could grant maybe, and I say maybe only having now looked at this and a bunch of similar plays.

Taking out the player, yes, that's what he's trying to do. In both cases and probably a hundred more by Utley and historically most aggressive base runners.

Edit: ok by "taking out" it is understood that this is sweeping feet out or disrupting...not outright tackle. Perhaps more tomorrow, but for now... Go Mets

ok Torre ruled it was a block of the fielder citing 5.09(a)(13)... which I can agree with, since it is a judgement. Guess I can go back to the ruling on the field which, even during replay, didn't cause the umpires "judgement" to change and just leave it that if Tajada hadn't already planted his foot, and as a result gotten his leg broken, no one would be crying for a suspension... just the fact that the umpires didn't rule it interference in the first place.

Couldn't watch last night's game, just sounded like Matz lost it in the 3rd.
Kershaw did what he needed to for the Dodgers and now onto game 5!
