I have no idea, Joe. I haven't fished with bait for years. But we have a lot of guys here who might be able to help you.

Similar to the Dos Equis commercials.... I don?t always fish bait but when I do I prefer an octopus hook. Circles are great when Mr . Sand spike is in use. The hardest thing to get used to is not swinging for the fences when a fish is running. I?ll Have plenty of pre tied snell rigs on hand , not a very easy knot to tie in the dark

This one bass limit makes any fishing where the gamefish might swallow a bait an untenable option. An angler should be prepared to fish in a way that permits release fishing. Bait does not permit that.

I still use the Uni-knot, only go back through 3 times with the thicker line used to the hook. Same thing when using a shock leader (4-5 times through on main line, 3 times through on the shock leader).

Maybe I am reading too much into what Frank said but it sure sounds like he is advocating the regulatory elimination of bait fishing for stripers as long as there is a 1 fish limit? The regulation in the Chesapeake Bay that circle hooks must be used when bait fishing rockfish is a pretty good indication that their use for catch and release works very well. It surely works a heck of a lot better than a lure with 3 treble hooks on it.

Doug

Not advocating anything. Its the regulations that foster certain consequences. The ONE fish limit places a lot of new limits on bait fishing. When you keep a fish, you are done fishing. You can't fish catch and release with bait; what if a fish swallows a bait and is bleeding? You can't throw it back bleeding. If you have killed your limit you are supposed to quit fishing. I don't make these rules; people who know nothing about fishing do.

With the new ONE fish limit, if you have caught and kept one bass, you are required to quit fishing. I suppose you could always say you were fishing for bluefish. I don't know what enforcement is going to think on this.

BTW, where went the originator of this thread?

Considering it's usually dark, if I can put a palomar through the eye, I will go with it. I have never found any knot so easy to tie and with such non slip reliability, along with so little line strength reduction. The whole circle hook thing is bout not gut hooking your quarry but even that's risky. Best advice I can give is never, ever spike the rod. Hold it.
You will not give the fish as much time to swallow it and you will catch more fish.

Good point. Because I don't bait fish any more, haven't in years, I find it hard to relate with this question.

I have always wondered how someone can spike the rod and then spend hours staring at a rod tip. When you hold it you can carry on a conversation, look around and smell the roses, watch the girls who come out at night etc. I have not thrown bait in three or four years but given the chance under the right conditions I would give it a go.

Something I never understood is that they have begun tying flies on circle hooks. Does that mean when a fish takes my fly I am supposed to let it hook itself?

That does sound fairly stupid. I get "no barbs", "tactical hooks" ( those are the ones with the rounded throat ) etc. Circles ? Why ? Somebody tossing bait with a long rod ?
