I am daydreaming about trying to catch cod this fall / winter.
Does anyone have a recommendation for me for how to go about this bucket-list item? I think there are cod to be caught off NJ and that there are boats heading out to the deeper water to target them. What can you suggest?
Cod fishing is tough because they are such a tasty fish combined with the fact that they are dumber than rocks and the species sees a lot of pressure.
I caught two shorts and a keeper over the winter on a Rhode Island cod trip where we fished around Block. I hit it on a very rough day and only about 12 fish caught on the party boat in total (my yearly reminder of why I hate fishing on party boats).
Locally I only had one short cod off NJ this year and we did some deep drops locally on some of my mixed bag trips.
I see some of the 6 pack charters put decent catches together when they fish the wrecks 40-60miles out....which are not economically viable for the party boats to hit daily.
I know Mushin does some of those trips and the Voyager does extended hour cod trips as well (I saw him all the way up at Block Island in February) which is a hike for a party boat.
If you really want to get in on good cod fishing and don't mind traveling head up to Massachusets (a lot of small to average size fish) or go freeze your balls off in Norway for giant cod.
