checking the weather and mid week looks like a few days of night time in the upper 30s; might be what we need to bring down water temps and get us kicked off; but what do I know...I get up at 3am and drive two hours to throw plugs pre dawn so my mental health is already questionable

That's not questionable, it's when you have to work 10 hours after that is when people wonder.

I spent Friday afternoon through Sunday morning fishing in the Park at various times, tides and weather. First time ever that I can remember being skunked for the entire weekend. I didn't see anyone catch anything or hear of any being caught there all weekend either. Clams, bunker and plugs to no joy on the beach. Maybe next time

I'm heading to IBSP tomorrow to try to catch a fish with my son.
I think that it's all going to break open and the fall run is going to hear the starting gun fire.
Yes sirree.
I'll be delighted to find schoolies in the bay again, actually.
I will report...

I ventured out kayak fishing on Saturday with Roger regardless of the strong wind forecast...LI Sound compared to Raritan Bay has a lot of islands and rock piles...you have always a place to hide depending on the wind direction...in open ocean this wind would be almost impossible to deal with...and at the end it was an interesting day nevertheless...in the early morning the bay erupted in massive blitz of small bass...up to 24"...the only thing they were hitting was a teaser...had a lot of fun with them trolling and casting...caught over a dozen...then went to Roger to join him in catching tog...well, not so fast ...all our best spots were exposed to north and north east wind ( 10mph with 20mph gusts) ...he stayed in the sheltered location whereas I went to the spot to see if there any chance to do some productive fishing...very choppy with a strong current ...could barely hold the position...managed to stay about half hour and was lucky enough to catch 2 shorts and a nice 19.5" keeper...on our way back there were several blitzes and then I got a nice blue on my light rod with 1/2oz jig..it took me 15 minutes to subdue her...what a fight...returned to launch point early with a lot of crab left ( they are sitting now in my fridge - hopefully they survive until next trip)

C.U., Just beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

One day I hope to try the kayak approach to fishing.

Meantime, I'll do my best with my feet on the bottom.

I have been surf fisherman too...and I will certainly do more than several trips to the beach on foot before this season ends...but kayak gives you such a freedom to move in all direction not only left and right along the beach...you can target different species of the fish...especially in summer months when surf is almost dead you can go for fluke, then for porgies, then for tog and if you find some bass or blues you catch them too....but it is true that more work and effort is required with bringing kayak to the ocean and then cleaning it afterwards etc etc...
