Bill, sorry I didn't know you were still using Durolocks, i would have given you mine. I threw mine out about 5 years ago when I switched to QuickClips. Lol

Learned my lesson. Grabbed an old teaser rig in haste and lost a nice fish. Already bought some tactical clips and today I replace any old clips I find. Never too old to learn

I made it to the beach yesterday for the top of the tide. It looked so damn fishy!
I fished a bit south of Shark River and kind of wandered onto the beach in the first place I saw a guy walking with a fishing rod. Turns out to have been a nice pile of rocks. I landed 3 fish, 2 on bucktails and 1 on a purple/black Mag Darter that I put on after it got dark. That was my first Mag Darter fish ever! All the fish were football fat and in the 23" to 25" range. Not a blitz but nothing skunky either.
The only thing better than catching some fish is being the one guy catching (for a change) with 3 or 4 other guys watching and digging in their tackle boxes for matching lures.

Nice job Joe. 2 dinks for me and a lot of miles were covered. Going to give the pm tide a shot today for a few hours.

my nephew was on beach south of the Hook today and got about 6-7 shorts; noticed schools of bait being hit; thinks it was herring

Tough togging on opening day like the rest of the fleet. A strong intermittent West wind with a sizable East swell made it hard to present baits properly and feel any bites.

We made up for it in the afternoon with a great topwater bass bite for a couple hours.

Had readings like this most of the afternoon. Much smaller fish than we have been catching recently but oddly very satisfying after a difficult morning!

HOOK to Lavalette; one short; one bass crashed my plug when on bunker but missed it; short burst was the only time I saw fish active; amazing amount of bait all down the coast; still thinking they are coming

Three hours out front at the Hook last night. Top of the incoming, slack, and top of the outgoing. Wind out of the North West, flattened the ocean. Stayed with the SP. Caught 2 in the wash with the potential to grow to 50 lbs. Just have to come back and catch them again in 15 years.

I tried the same spot below the Shark River inlet yesterday morning for a supremely frustrating time. The bunker were %110 of my casting range away and had bass under them. I know this because the guy standing next to me with the 12 foot rod and VS reel was able to reach them, snag and drop, going 3 for 3. I could loft my snag and cast to my backing and still not quite make it. Ahhh.
The bowhead whales were putting on a show for me and the fleet of boat guys 300 yards out. I wonder how many bunker they can put down their gullets in a day...(the whales, not the boaters)
It was astounding looking at the bunker popping as far north, south and out as I could see. What a morning!
I was entertaining myself with bunker chunks on a fishfinder rig for awhile and had my rig snipped off at the steel technical anglers clip by a snapper blue. An hour later I pulled in that cut off rig with a dogfish attached to it. One more bright note to an otherwise skunky trip.

spent 4 hrs from Sea Bright to Long Branch; hundreds of guys on the beach; dozens of boats, many close in; lots of birds working but not really hitting the water and no evidence of fish on bait; did not see a single fish caught in surf or boat

Decided to stay home. Didn't need a snag in my ear

Bill, it was the same for me down south. Boat and surf fisherman gore.
Covered a lot of ground south to north from seaside to the hook.
Not a tap, bump, or swirl for me as well as most I spoke to.
Did see a blue landed and heard of another blue landes.

Straight up combat fishing this morning in the bunker pods.

We landed 8 bass to 47" and some bluefish livelining bunker.

Bunker was scattered due to all the boat traffic.
