Exclamation "The Cloud" - Hackers Heaven

The tech industry has been hyping "the Cloud" for the past few years - Examples of "the Cloud" are Google Drive, Dropbox, and Amazon Cloud Drive.

Do NOT store any personal and/or important files in any freaking Cloud.

Microsoft is now offering subscriptions to "Office 365," the suite of Excel, Word, PowerPoint that runs in their "Cloud."

Adobe previously announced the were dropping individual licenses for their suite of software in favor of a subscription only "Adobe's Creative Cloud." This includes Adobe's Photoshop, among other graphics programs plus Adobe Reader for PDF files.

Today Adobe admitted that they have been hacked, the usernames and passwords of 38 million customer accounts have been stolen. No mention of credit cards but in keeping with the long standing SOP of tech companies and governments you can bet that there will be additional "bad news" in the near future.

Where do I store important or personal files.
1: A stand-alone hard drive with an On/Off switch - like "My Book"
2: USB Flash Memory Sticks

I've been against "the cloud" from the beginning, but it's like pi$$ing in the wind to try to convince folks of the dangers.

I really wanted to run office on my ipad, but you have to subscribe to "office 365" and I refuse, not just because of the $

Still a lot of confused information on how this happened, if you have an iPhone the solution is simple, it's called "prevention."

1: Don't be STUPID, e.g. don't take a picture you would be embarrassed for others to see, don't save embarrassing info on a smartphone and don't save anything private, important or embarrassing to any Cloud service.

2: Go into Settings, then iCloud and select the Apps you don't want backed up to Apple's iCloud, e.g. Photos. See the screenshot below.

3: Backup your iPhone via iTunes ONLY to your PC's hard disk - select "Encrypt iPhone Backup" first.

I realize that many people are technologically challenged, my wife is one, I check her iPhone settings regularly, update it for her, etc. If you have a teenager you would be wise to double-check his/her smartphone settings and Apps. Both iPhone and Androids.

Apple's full statement can be read below.
We wanted to provide an update to our investigation into the theft of photos of certain celebrities. When we learned of the theft, we were outraged and immediately mobilized Apple’s engineers to discover the source. Our customers’ privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet. None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud? or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved.

To protect against this type of attack, we advise all users to always use a strong password and enable two-step verification. Both of these are addressed on our website at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4232.

Two-step verification can be a PITA but it is the best system right now. I use it for my Apple and Google accounts. When I ran BringSeanHome.org there were constant attempts to hack it from Brazil. I used a service called Duo Security which is a 2 step verification for websites. Set it up to protect the backend software, all hacking attempts ceased.

Perhaps some day soon all our devices will require eye scans - then we'll see people walking down the street holding their phones to their eyes.

No matter with any of this I will never trust any cloud service.

That's the point, never ever store important details and embarrassing pictures in any Cloud service. Don't be stupid!

What scares me the most is when I see people use password management apps or spreadsheets to keep all their passwords stored in one place.

John, you bring up a real dilemma. I have so many different accounts and passwords it's simply mind boggling. No way can I recall all the passwords and I do NOT allow any of the browsers I use to store passwords automatically.

I use two methods to store passwords and important info.
First is a simple text file which is only saved to a password protected USB drive.
Second is an app called Keeper. It operates in the "cloud" but has a double log in, first a password and then I get a "challenge" text message. It operates across all the platforms I use, on my MacPro, iPhone and laptop so they are all updated automatically.

If you or anyone has a better method, please share.

I use pen and paper "remember that stuff" to keep my log/pass info on.
