Default Keeping Your Mouth Shut

This came up in another thread and I've been thinking about it for a while. When should we be keeping our mouths shut? And when is it not a big deal to discuss spots and/or success?

Very simple. You keep your mouth shut about the fishing you had last night or that which you want to keep for yourself. You stop trying to protect places where everybody is going to go anyway -- Montauk, The canal, Race Point.

You tell those who can tell you something sometime.
You tell those who are out busting their butt like you are.
You tell those who will respect your space and not tell others.

You never tell those who watch and wait.
You never tell those who are more interested in socializing than success.
You never tell those who never tell you.

Nicely put. I struggle with over-enthusiasm sometimes. There have been a number of times when I've been caught up in a situation that got me so pumped that I blabbed to people and kicked myself afterwards . But I guess "say nothing" is an overstatement.

I share info with those who share with me, and those who I know will respect my privacy(aka they won't blab).
If I do share information with people I don't know, it is either about well known spots, or I don't give out specific information about the location and time.

I think it is an immediacy issue. If someone tells me about something happening RIGHT NOW, I wont tell a soul.

If it is an ongoing steady bite and/or there are no state secrets to get there, I have a network that I wont hesitate to call. However, its not that large and they resemble the first three lines of Capn BA great credo.

If it is a well known spot that is not blowing up I wont describe it in detail, but I will talk about it and recommend it to good folks. I am even starting to rethink that.

I have stayed away from everybody for so many years that people think I don't go. There is a writer who seeks to embarrass me who is always saying, "where is he? Do you see him?"

Only tell your friends that have moved out of town.
I don't tell anybody anything. If asked, the answer is not a hit. Also i throw everything back. That way I can't be caught with a fish. Been burned to many times by just being followed on spotted by someone thats know me.

There's a great line in Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye: "What I'd tell him you could fold into a blade of grass."

Words to live by when walking the beach...

When I fished it was usually 12am to dawn. That cured a lot of issues with competition even at spots that were just burned in a magazine. I think I saw 1 or 2 people a year, if that. The only other thing I had to do was say nothing and I was ok.

True, Walter, people can't take the tough hours after working all week. The thing about my situation is being Mister Smarty, creates a lot of attention. If a person recognizes me its worse than a fot in church. The assumption that it is a place where stripers go to die springs from that. They wouldn't dream of relegating the place as a Frank mistake.

I had not seen Charley Cinto in 35 years yet he knew who I was because of my wife being with me. Does anyone here remember when I used to say I was fishing P-town in a pink chiffon?
