Jo, I have caught fish in early March when the bays and river open, even when the water temps were in the mid 40?s. The key is a steady temp. In the spring the water temps bounce up and down, cold Water runoff from melting snow and ice will shut the bite down, but a few days of sunshine will warm the mud flats warming the water a few degrees. I have caught fish in 42 degree water, when it?s been steady like that for a few days. A warm day with a late afternoon high tide will warm the mud and the shallows, steady temps and afternoon high tides are the key. The fish will still be lethargic, so clams and worms are the meal of choice. Until your buddies come walking up the beach and catch a doz in front of you on sp?s

A contractor failed to show up at my Piscataway place, so I stopped at Belmar on my way home to Virginia yesterday afternoon.

Was hoping to catch a few sundials.

Got there around 3:45 PM and cast a Berkey black shad minnow (cause that's all I had in my tackle box) around without any luck. Snagged a few razor clam shells.

Incoming tide, very strong. Should brought some heavier sinkers. Lots of various sea birds around. No people there except a half dozen sitting in cars.

I quick when I got a snag that I couldn't get loose.

Went to the Windmill for dinner.

Not a report here, just a grumble:
I was trying to get out on a party boat togging for my first time and had yesterday set up with my buddy to go out on the Gambler out of Brielle, I think. As you may have noticed it was a little windy (blowing steady at +30 mph with gusts over 50 offshore.) Today, though, would have been just about as perfect a day as I could have hoped for. Rats.

On the bright side, I might get a shot at hard water fishing in PA Sunday or Monday. Woowee!

that summed up my fishing season last year with an addition... when I DID finally get out the bite was off "shoulda been here last week..."

praying for a better 2019

Second day in a row without rain! Of course my truck is probably frozen in that lake that recently formed in my driveway.

Ha! Nice line.
Here's a quote from Craig McInnes, a Vancouver Sun columnist:
I'm not in the land of grumpy old men yet, but I can see it from here.

Sounds like me...

All my years of fishing the backbays In early spring and thinking only bait because the water is cold and the fish are still lethargic and wouldn?t chase plugs. you proved me wrong my good buddy. You put on a show, it was fun to watch.

I made it out to the Inlet on Saturday around 2PM.

Lots of women going into the club at the Marina. Thought that strange for so early in the day.

Marina was calm and tide was low. Water clear. Did not see anything swimming at bottom. Saw dead crabs every 50 yards laying at the bottom. Lots of seabirds, just lounging in the water.

At the mouth of the inlet...Tide was incoming and water was churning like a washing machine. Cloudy and windy.

I was using a sebicki rig and hoping to pick some herring.

Did some casting for over an hour before my rig snagged on the rocks. I called it quits.

Army Corp of Engineers was dredging the mouth of the inlet - sucking up water and filling the hold. An Asian film crew on the other side of the inlet had several cameras going and pointed at me for a long time before they left.

Thought I might go up to the Stone Pony or grab a boardwalk slice, but decided to just head home to Virginia.

Maybe on a sunnier day, I might have better luck? Or a day when there is no boat dredging? Or later in the day at the top of the tide? I'm new to using sebicki.

There was some women's fem meetings going on Saturday, all over.

I'd be looking for clean water, especially if I'm exploring. You want as much in your favor as possible.

Hey, at least you gave it a shot. I'll be hitting some perch spots eventually in the back eventually. Was off yesterday and back before I knew it was going to arctic out there, that was my plan (back a few weeks ago)... 10F and 35knot winds changed my mind as I tried that one other year (when it was nearly as cold) and the temps made me miserable and shut down the perch, plus the wind dirties up the flats.
