Since moving to the Cape, I love to have folks from away come to visit and fish. In the last couple weeks I've had folks from NH, MA and Fl to fish with and had a ball doing it. But, once in a while, it's nice to fish alone or with another capecodder. Today, I fished alone.
Launched at Ssuet harbor about an hour after high and headed off to the east and the Brewster flats.
Clear, SE wind of about 5-10 mph and a load of fish up on the flats in real shallow water - 2-5 feet - rooting out sandeels. Sandeels and flies cast toward the cruising fish were ignored. Finally, I adopted a Red Clark tactic and set up trolling, weaving in and out between 2 and 6 foot depth. It wasn't long before the Piewaski squid begain to produce and produce and produce !!! Six fish from 30 to 39" in about an hour. Fish that previously would not even turn and look at a cast fly or even a cast fresh Sandeel.
A couple hours later with grilled Striper Steaks served up with fresh roasted red potatoes and carrots and, what more could one ask for.............?
Well, maybe 40# plus fish to go with the vegies...............................
