The press is free to cover what they deem as important; its even guaranteed by the Constitution. What lowers public confidence is the press's failure to provide news coverage that is accurate and untarnished by political considerations. Instead they slant the news in a way that they feel will sell more papers or serve their political agenda, or both.
If some guy gets into trouble the news coverage will crucify him as what was done to me. Then a bigger, newer story comes along like the attack on Twin Towers in 9/1/1 and the bigger story gets the news coverage and some guy shooting a dog becomes old news. When all those people were killed in NY that time my attorney called me and said, "Frank, your all set now. The papers have a bigger story." He was right the dog shooting story was gone. Kaput!
