Default "I got this stuff figured out" vs "Every day is an education"

How have your views evolved and what quote would you most identify with right now?

I know it's fashionable to be humble but the fish do tend to be creatures of habit. Stuff I've learned over so many years gets me on fish thankfully enough. But yes, most days I learn something new. The other day I saw bluefish blitzing shrimp. Yes big shrimp. I think they were mantis shrimp.

A day later the wind was forecasted to go hard NE and then SE. I knew where to go and I knew the tide. But fishing had been so poor I figured why bother. But oh yes they where there for those Surfcasters who got out of bed

How do you see it?

I see myself as an anachronism. My views, lifetime development are based upon a world that has changed where SW fishing is not the same as it was when my attitudes and views developed. My desire to go fishing in SW is fraught with hesitancy over some inner fear that I would be breaking some law over which I was never informed. Its even worse hunting. Things are changing too fast.

I often go to the RI Hunts website and read the arrests which are wildly outragious, the courts crowded with "violators". Imagine a news headline: "Well Known Writer Arrested". In 2001 my name was in the paper over something that I was never even charged. No arrest; just a police inquiry over the discharge of a firearm in self-defence. My phone rang off the hook with crank calls. Can you just see Mister Smarty caught with a 9 3/4 inch scup.

People view a public person as open game. They name you but don't sign the complaint. Phone cranks are the worst!

The evolution of views on the sport is far more complicated that the fish
What I do see is that the contributions of Surfcasters can be quickly forgotten

I see that by me. Many of the post WW 2 pioneers and early influencers are being forgotten rather quickly

But maybe those of a generation before me thought the same?

Some things in surfcasting are just flat out given. Night fishing, presentations that inspire more hits, bait choices, lure choices, types of water/current. Seasonal issues, to name just some of the constants.

Never forget that authorship is a business and people who are not qualified will do it for the money.

I Got This Stuff Figured Out: 12/23/2017 two fishing sessions totaling 3 hours. 80+ small stripers. Anyone standing 100 yards left or right of me with a decent bucktail and minimal skills would have it figured out too.
Every Day is an Education: 12/26/2017 two hours, 20 F for 1 little dinky rat, same spot, conditions, finished my season right there.
I had it all figured out but the fish did not necessarily agree.

One of the charms of surfcasting are the ever-so-many things that happen which we can never explain. The activity is fraught with theories and wild explanations that can never be proven. Surfcasting is, like hunting and ping-pong, the home of junk science.
