Default Fewer mackerel sightings each year?

Is it my imagination, or are there few mackerel sightings each year?

Been looking at the boat fishing reports since 2014 and that was maybe the last year I heard any good fishing reports.

All years afterward seem to be around mid-jan reporting "Well, the mackerel didn't show up like we expected them. So we are closing up and doing boat maintenance til spring..."

My friend has been getting them almost daily off the Canarsie pier in NYC.

I haven't read about the big schools in many years.
