Default Re: Favorite Artificial?

I had a chuckle this weekend. I know plenty of fishermen who use various artificials as a regular part of their arsenal. On the Outer Banks they are usually targeting trout or Spanish mackerel unless there are plentiful bluefish around.....which are typically in the 2 lb and smaller category. This spring the big blues have returned with some consistency for the first time in a LONG time.

Those big blues are what drew many anglers to Hatteras in years past, but have been relatively rare since the early 90s. Anyway...with the return of the slammers comes a great increase in use of lures and wire leaders. One angler this weekend was describing a metal but he couldn't recall the name. He was talking about Hopkins lures. Hell, I think I have them from 1 to 4 or 4.5 Oz. I thought it was funny because the Hopkins was almost the generic metal back in the day but with the absence of those big blues for years folks had "cast" them aside!

Al, do the Hopkins work at night. For some reason nobody ever used tins at night, especially me. It seems the flash of tin would not be present when it is dark.

Once I took a pilgrim surf casting at dusk and gave him a Hopkins and a Danny with instructions to use the metal until it got dark then switch to the plug. He forgot to switch and took stripers on the Hopkins well into the night.

When you think about it, a Hopkins (or other metal) is about the size of the flies we use; so it is logical that it would work at night.

Yea, I think of all the shiny silver baitfishes who still get eaten at night. Don't see why a tin wouldn't work.

Interesting answers but I still detect a hint of reservation in both those remarks. When I was introduced to the crippled herring on the Canal my mentor insisted that the CR be used only during the day. And during the day I knocked the nuts off stripers with that CR. Never thought to use the CR at night.
