Exclamation Samsung warns users to watch what they say in front of Smart TVs

A "smart" TV that listens and responds to your voice commands? Sounds like a nifty idea -- until the manufacturer reminds you that your TV is listening to your private conversations too.

Samsung recently unveiled a new line of Internet-connected Smart TVs that can stream customized content and show recommendations. The TVs also allow users to control their set with voice commands.

But what many users may not realize is that the voice recognition system works by transmitting those voice commands to a third-party service that then converts the speech to text.

Buried in the privacy policy insert that comes with the TV, Samsung reminds users to watch what they say in front of the TV, because their device could be picking up their personal information as well:

"Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition," the statement reads.

unbelievable.

I heard this and thought what the HECK was Samsung thinking?

I pretty much hate all Voice control devices and now I have a reason to hate a company behind such devices.

Talk to your IPhone ( Siri ) saves a lot of time punching in the keypad besides Voice Control it helps people who can't use their arms or hands.

remember the movie 2001 Space Odyssey ? it was very creepy @ that time

If I had no use of arms or hands, I'd have an excuse, but I'd rather use eye movements... it would keep my actions somewhat private.

I don't have siri, and never have used any voice blahblahs on my droid compatible anythings.

That said, I'm not debating the issue, just stating my dislike for the technology.

As to HAL, that type of technology is very near. Frightening indeed.

No surprise there. They already had web cams on computers turning on by themselves.

I'll bet your phone can come on too when somebody on the other end has the need to hear what you doing.

We have a Samsung "Smart" TV but never switched on the Voice system. Like Hook I only talk back to the TV during Jeopardy but normally do not reply in the form of question.

Oh wait I do curse while watching baseball, football, basketball, golf, soccer and especially a speech by any politician.
