Surf rod Bumper Holder
Just picked ua a jeep JK with a reciever hitch on front bumper. Can anyone tell me why a "Jersey Surf" 6-rod holder would be twice the cost of a "Fish-n-Mate 6 rod holder? No doubt the materials but is it really that much better?

Re: Surf rod Bumper Holder
Are you talking about the cooler rack or just the rod holder?
I had the Fish n Mate 4 rod holder on my Exploer for 5 years.
Never a problem. Sold it and it is still being used.
7 years old and still looks new.
They work best on jeeps because of the solid flat space on the bumper.
I had it mounted to one of those cheap cargo racks for the cooler.
You don't need to use the reciever hitch for just the rod holder.

Re: Surf rod Bumper Holder
Yea just the rod holder. There's a $140.00 between the 2. Just wasn't sure. Thanks for the info I'm leaning towards fish mate.

Re: Surf rod Bumper Holder
Blazin where did you get the rubber pieces from for the top of the PVC tubes?
I now have a custom cooler rack with pvc tubes with slots cut for the reels. It would be nicer with the rubber tops.

Re: Surf rod Bumper Holder
Get the radiator hose that the big trucks use. Go to a truck stop.

You can also buy the rubber caps with the 2 fingers sticking up the are made to go on top of the tubes. They fit 2 inch pipe and don't worry, the whole on the top widens to hold all rods.
Available at The Surfcaster.

Maybe someday Joe when I get the stainless tubes.
Those are too nice for the PVC , plus I'd need 8 of them
I can't afford anything right now.
My rack was over $400 including the welds on my truck.
I still need some more important stuff and the PVC is working.

Re: Surf rod Bumper Holder
I had made a nice 4 rod anodized aluminum rack a year ago for my truck but it went when I sold the truck it was on. For the tops of the tubes, I drilled a 5/8" hole about 2" down the tube in the center, then used a sawzall to cut vertically down to the sides of the hole, leaving a deep U in the tube. I got some plastic dip from the hardware store (about $8) and dipped the first 2-3" of each tube into it multiple times. The excess can be trimmed with a razor. Worked great, held up, and never scratched my reels so I'm sure these same techniques would work for PVC. Good for the budget minded folk, provided you own tools or have buddies that own them.
