We fished Tog out east North Fork with Hermit crabs . Best bait ever . But maybe NJ Tog might be different. Wink wink

Hermit crabs are awesome baits, but tough to come by in many places.

I have recently found a supply of fiddlers and plan on using them, just have to plan
it in advance to catch enough for a trip.

edit: (corrected hermits vs. fiddlers above... I don't know where enough hermits are to be useful for tog)

Late report from over the weekend, managed to pick up one blue about 3lbs on a small popper, a ton of spearing around with blues on them every so often, switched over to fluke, but only managed 5 shorts. Happy to put this fluking season to bed, started out great and then slowly went down hill from there.

Hoping some albies make an appearance soon.

Hermits can be found from commercial or charter Capts who are willing to share their supply .
Fiddlers are easy catch Sod banks / jetties are the location = ladies stockings insert a piece of chicken tie a knot in the opening and tie to a metal steak . Wait a few hours all crabs 🦀 with get their claws tangled in the stocking. There you go .

Hermits - no shot at them around here

Fiddlers - I'll give that a try

The NY guys & LIS guys love hermit crabs, I have never seen anyone actually fish them in NJ. I think the main reason being you can't really buy them here locally.

Some NY shops will carry hermits but they are more expensive than other types of crab.

This time of year we do really well with Green crabs which are cheap and basically the only crab you can buy at a tackle shop. NY tog season opens up in about another month and then we might be able to source white leggers which are my favorite but 50% more expensive than green.

Asian and fiddlers work but can be a pain to gather if you are trying to get enough for an entire boat of guys...if it's just you fishing off land...I would do Asian, fiddler or if your lazy/in a time pinch just go Green. lol

Rough weekend for me, got to the boat Saturday morning only to discover on the ride out that the Port side motor wouldn't shift in/out of gear.

Decided to give it aXshotXlocally in the bay w/just the other motor where we had good action past trip (only a few miles from the marina).

The action was slow, water was filthy, peanut bunker was everywhere.

Wind vs Tide....drift sucked and didn't want to make a runXelsewhere on just the one motor.

Put some keepers on deck and back at the dock before noon. X

I'll get my revenge on the flat ones this weekend...

Thought I would share something with you, a lot of people dread a tropical storm coming up the coast, I look forward to it. After catching another Jack Cravelle last year, I went back and checked my log for 2009 when I caught the first one. 8/24/09 two days after hurricane Bill. 5pm, incoming tide, the water was 76 deg. Caught on a eel punt swimmer school bus color. 7 yrs and 3 wks later, 9/14/16 about a week after hurricane Hermaine, 80 deg water, 5 pm, top of the tide, caught on a deadly dick plus a albie at dusk. You just never know what's traveling north
