Default Eels for bait this year

I've heard that eels are scarce this year on cape cod due to poaching for forigen food markets. Is this true? since i can't get herring for live bait i'd like to use eels.
thanks,

Eels are being way over harvested (both legal and non-legal harvest) and this along with the normal dam and pollution problems has caused the stock to crash. I don’t think it’ll happen this year but I wouldn’t be surprised to see strong restrictions placed on their harvest. This’ll probably mean that most of them will be harvested for food because that’s a much more lucrative market than the bait market.

What’ll probably happen in the short is that finding them will become more difficult and they’ll be more expensive when they are around.

Seabait Inc is a brittish company who has opened an aquaculture operation in Coastal Maine. So they will be selling worms in bait shops along the new england coast starting this spring. Despite the Herring and Eel issues, at least the worm supply should be good.
