Default OBX vacation in April

Taking the family to the Outer Banks in a few weeks and was looking for any and all surf fishing advice. I have poles, bait rigs purchased here, and many lures and plugs. The only thing missing is a little advice.

The first thing I do and what you should do is relax and have fun. Throw out some bait and enjoy the day. If you catch some thing good for you, because I'll be at work so enjoy the fishing and good look

I plan on enjoying the beach the days we are there. My boys will bring their lacrosse sticks down to the surf and we can wait for the rods to bend over.

What is the bait of choice in the Outer Banks? We are staying in Corolla for the week.

If you want to see a spectacular sight, head down to Cape Point (Buxton) when the wind blows hard out of the SW. Unless you are properly equipped (both equipment and using it) and know how to fish with a large group of people concentrated in a small area, just watch.

Drum runs with really large fish can and most likely will occur under that condition at that spot and it is truly a spectacle that will leave you and your kids with a lifetime memory.

Bunker will be the choice dead bait.

Prior to heading down you should prepare by checking the reports at

www.outerbanksfishing.com

as well as www.fishmilitia.com

The Red Drum tackle shop at Buxton is also a good source.

In addition you can find info on bait and tackle shops as well as weather and water temps too.

I agree with Doug....check out the point at Hatteras. It's a bit of a ride from Corolla but would be well worth the trip. Another point of interest on the way is Oregon Inlet.

checking out cape point during a blitz is a must
when I lived there 12 years ago we had a sw blow that lasted 9 days. I caught 18 drum over 40lbs.
I will never forget that experiance.

We go to the 4x4 area north of Corrola for 2 wks. every year. The bait shops up there are more for tourists. Head up to the 4x4 area you will have a blast. You can catch Reds, Stripers and some good size sharks if the temps are right.

I am heading down for the first time for the first week of May. We are staying in Kill Devil Hills but are willing to travel for fish and beach access. Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Take the time to go down to Ocracoke, the southern tip has nice water to fish from the front right around to the inside you can fish the main channel edge here on the inside good for fish and the front as well.. The north tip at the ferry dock on the inside behind the sand pile has a nice rip and holds bait and fish. Beach access not a problem the road is by the airport and if its open there is a small road that goes to the south tip but either way you go go south on Ocracoke. Plenty of rooms to stay the night if you want. The southern tip at midnight is a awesome spot. 40 miles from the main land no light pollution.
