Default Big drum on Okrakoke

Lots of puppies at the point again over the weekend but the bigger news was that a dozen or so large drum were caught on Okrakoke Island. One was reported at 47". These fish cannot be kept, of course, but are more than worthy opponents in the surf. The sw winds have pushed warm (53-55) water up on the beaches triggering the bite. The folks at Red Drum said the fish were caught on a variety of baits as well as artificials.

Default Re: Big drum on Okrakoke

I think that is the shortest span of I've ever seen between big drum caught on Ocracoke in the winter. I believe the Tradewinds site has pictures of 2 large drum caught there on January 19? That's less than 2 months!

On cold winters, those big fish are gone by mid-December and don't reappear until mid-April.

Thanks for the report giacommin, shoot me an e-mail in April if your interested in fishing Assateague in May.

Also, they opened most of that Island back up to driving back in 2005, not sure if it's still like that but if it is it surely gives you a better shot at them!
