Greetings from LBI. I'm in Beach Haven Crest on vacation this week.

Went out front this morning from 7-8:30. Walked right to a hickory shad blitz a block and a half from my beach house. At first I thought they were large snappers with all that jumping around after small bait. So I put on a 1 oz. t-hex and casted out with an empty teaser hook still attached. What do you know I get a hit and hooked a nice-sized shad on the plain teaser hook. Although I didn't have the normal teasers with me, I put on the 3" pearl Gulp minnow grub as the teaser with great success. Fun on light tackle to 18", non-stop for over an hour. When shad moved away from the beach, I switched to Gulp! bloodworms and had my way with croaker and small snappers.

Beautiful fun-filled way to start the day. There were even a couple of dolphins putting on a show of their own.

Saw some nice Bass landed last night (not schoolies) and missed quite a specimen myself.
Met Mike from the board. It was nice at midnight on a barren beach to see a SSC guy roll up and pull in a keeper. In August.
Hi Mike

Things are not as they appear these days, do what you always did and you will get what you always got.

It was a matter of distance not presentation, but soft plastics and hard plastics. Lower in the water column seemed better, but that is a night by night thing.

Talking Re: Fishing Reports August 16th- August 31st

Last week's fishin at Pt Pleasant was kinda different than normal. There was very little action on the robins and skates, not normal, but had some big hits, just not fast enough to supply the set. And that was on circles where they normally hook themselves. Caught about 6 or 7 rays on bait, jigs, and spoons, landed them all, but a lot of other fisherman's lines were breaking. It looked like they were just horsing them rather than waiting them out. I just hate losing rigs so I take my time. The fluking has been better from the shore that the boat half the time. Caught about 5 keepers on 2 and 3 oz spros and teasers. On Wednesday afternoon bout 1:00, saw a big shark come in close. He was about 100 yards out when we spotted him, splashing, hitting on some kind of fish, then he came in to about 25 yards. I had on a 3 oz spoon but only a single hook w/bucktail and he would go for it, and I had no luck snaggin it either. The crowd couldn't believe the size of it. It was in close enough where you could tell it was about 6 or 7 ft long, but I'm no expert on type of shark, but may have been a sand shark. The top dorsal and upper body seemed a little darker gray almost black, which is unlike a sand shark (I guess). He hung out about 20 minutes and I spotted him again at dusk, but he stayed well out of range. Will try again this week, have to work Tues and Wed but will have Thur-Sat to try one last time.

Rented a skiff to take the wife and daughter out fishing for a couple hours yesterday afternoon just inside Barnegat Inlet. Gorgeous day out. Sea robins galore and a couple short fluke. They had fun pulling in fish after fish. All on Gulp! chartruese minnows and bucktails. I also had a monster hit in shallow water near the marina on a 2oz bucktail which peeled out some line with tremendous force before the 30lb leader got cut off. I wasn't even able to crank in any line or lift up the light fluke rod. I'm guessing a good-sized bluefish.

It's been dead up here in NoMoCo. Dead as dead can be. I did some birds and blues a couple of days ago about a football field off the beach though.

I caught a fairly large skate on chartreuse gulp. Only telling you this because it's august, and that's the only thing I saw caught today.

Fished out of Manasquan on Thur. We ran down to Bay Head and all the way up to Long Branch. Picked up 25 or so fluke with 4 keepers. Also picked up 2 keeper sea bass out of the 10 or so that we caught. All fish caught on Spros with a teaser and all hit the teaser but 1. Skates love the Spros though, wouldn't leave them alone. 33hemi! No drift in the am, very fast in the pm.

I was at the new Keyport marina area yesterday around high tide. They did a great job fixing up that area. Lots of fish blitzing on tons of peanut bunker. tossed everything in my bag with no luck hooking up. From what I was able to see it looked like 3 -4 pound blues. It was good to see a gazzillion peanut bunker. Good sign for the Fall
