Our home is filled with wildlife art, always bought cheap but some pieces are worth a lot of money. We once bought a Wild Turkey Federation painting, signed and numbered, at auction matted and framed, for 50 bucks. (Lee Cable "The Turkey Club") It was recently appraised for $500. Of course I don't anybody who buys that stuff.

John Rice Original Watercolor- "Off The Cuttyhunk Clubhouse" (2018)

More great stuff by John Rice. I missed this FEBRUARY 1, 2018 auction.

John is one of the best of the few surfcasting artists there are or have been. I love his night scenes.

Be sure to go to the links to see large versions of the pix.

For what they are the two renderings went off cheap. Outdoor art is a strange animal in that if the right person likes it the price gets bid up.

At a Wild Turkey Federation dinner one time I got a beautiful matted framed signed and numbered copy of Lee Cable's "The Turkey Club" for $50. Bidders were all in the men's room after dinner and I was the only bidder and it was the opening bid. Its beautiful and hangs in our living room. When a piece hits you, you will know it.

Those two of yours are a visual experience, especially for surfcasters. I personally knew a lot of the old time Cuttyhunk charter greats -- Sab, Smith, Haig. They caught a lot of big fish -- one by Charles Cinto.

walter, agreed outstanding pic!

offbeat for this forum, the US Post office issued an outdoor plaque years ago, titled "Trout Fishing". A friend who introduced me to fly tying and the local post office both had the plaque (apparently the head of that post office owned it, as I inquired about purchasing it several times). It was a great print of an underwater brook trout taking a fly, mounted in a shadow box along with several "trout fishing" stamp issues. Saw it on ebay once then never again. Can't even find an image of it online any longer.

Our home is full of outdoor art which is associated with what we do. Wild Turkey Federation framed prints, Ducks Unlimited prints, trophy pix of game kills. Some we bought and others were won shooting in competition.

Question: is a fish mount art?

I'd say it is. My reasoning: let's say the taxidermist mounted the striped bass, but painted it with polka dots 😄...artist using his "artistic license"...it's art. And if you mount and repaint parts of the fish to look exactly like the original, it's similar to an artist (painter) replicating another artist's painting or photo.

Then again, I used to date a girl that could paint from a photo, and her painting would look exactly like the photograph! ...but she didn't consider herself an artist because she was replicating someone else's work.

Art is a corrupted term. Originally it meant something related to the human condition. You are speaking of craft, also, a corrupted term that now means junk. It used to mean works of man done with skill.

In college I was required to take one art course which was as boring as tongue kissing your aunt. In it, as I recall, the Prof said that if something was a visual experience it was art. I have some great visual renditions of duck and turkey and deer hunting and both of us like to look at them and take pride in the association we have with the artistic renditions. Even a great photo is art.

I once sold two photos to the Surfcaster Catalog which were reproduced as posters and sold in the catalog. I'm told they sold very well. Both have been matted and framed and hang in our home. Years ago, I think one was called "Striper Dawn"; I forget the other.

My late father, who was a full time firefighter, used to cut color pictures out of National Geographic, frame them and hang them in the fire house at work. Hey, as long as they are a visual experience.

The artist that rendered that was a famous-at-the-time regular contributor. But I forget his name. He regularly did covers for Saturday Evening Post, I think. His work had a recognizable distinct quality. Not just a visual experience, there was always a cogent social message in his paintings.
