Default Cabrera ... Who's your daddy?

OK baseball commentators...Cabrera having a great couple of years. He is not yet DiMaggio, Mantle, Tony Gwynn, George Brett, Musial, Ted Williams, Ichiro, Yaz, Mays, or many others. lets wait a while. Currently best hitter in the game...yes...but lets stop there, OK

Let's not, let's wait till his career is over and then compare him to guys like Ted Williams, the Babe, Gehrig, Musial and Joe D, true great ballplayers.

Incidentally, when we do compare it has to include fielding stats.

That's what I say about Ortiz. At least Cabrera gets in the way of a batted ball.

I started some batting stats last night, will get to post them later. He has some good numbers, and over a significant number of years. Of course, he has a fraction of the stolen bases tha Mickey had. 'Really?' You ask? Yeah, Mickey with a bum knee for a third of his career.

As mentioned, put some fielding and other categories besides BA there and Cabrera has a ways to go.

Just wanted to move this discussion away from the reports thread

Cabrera's carrer is not over yet, but if you're judging him strictly as a hitter, I think he is a better hitter than Mantle and compares very favorably with the Yankee Clipper. Mantle didn't even have a 300 batting average for his career and the power numbers are relatively equal.
The two big questions with Cabrera are:
1. How far will his numbers slip as he ages, which can really damage your career batting average.
2. Will he ever be tied to performance enhancing drugs sometime down the road.
The drug suspicions might always be there just because of the era he played in.
Also, an extremely high percentage of foreign born players have been linked to steroids. The reason for this could be the easy access. For example, in Mexico you can go to a pharmacy (like a Rite Aid in the US) and purchase growth hormone over the counter without a presrciption. Some countries have no regulations with these drugs.

Kroc,

There's much more to be said on this, but (1) yes, Cabrera will be under suspicioun until MLB releases the names of the other 100 failed "anonymous" drug tests, the list from which Alex Rodriquez's name was first "leaked". and (2) there is a lot more to the Mick than batting avg, and one must look at him prior to his knee injury to understand.

anyhow, no time for stats right now, so that's all I can say on this... for now

Mantle was a little before my time but I think I can be pretty objective in my comparison. Mantle was obviously a better fielder and runner. Mantle did play in an era that was dominated by pitching and he did battle injuries for a good part of his career.
However, with that being said, I don't see any way you can argue that Mantle was a better hitter than Cabrera. Mantle only drove in 100 runs 4 times in his career, had a lifetime average below 300, and struck out more often than Cabrera.
You could argue without injuries Mantle would have been another Babe Ruth, but we can only judge a player on what he DID accomplish, not what could have been.

that's the thing, take away his injured years, add in RUNS SCORED, and compare the Slugging and OPS and he is easily equal of Cabrera, or arguably better (depending on your loyalty ... or not ).

add in his fielding and running and I think hands down, I'm picking Mantle over Cabrera.

that said, I never looked at Cabrera until you brought him up... so good job!

Mantle was a speedster down the line, but he only stole about 150 bases in his career. Rickey Henderson almost did that in one season.

Just comparing the 162 Game Average Line I would have to take Gehrig over Cabrera especially because Lou played during the "dead ball" era.

So, strictly looking at the 162 Game Average line IMO the top 3 All Time Batters are 2 "dead ball" era Yankees and 1 Red Sox.

What would William's and DiMaggio's stats be if their careers were not interrupted in their prime for three seasons during WWII?
