Bob,

I'm not seriously looking at many stats in this thread. What I decided to do was just look at the pitching staffs and see how many wins that staff could potentially produce, just based on gut instinct and past performance, then track actually throughout the year, along with the teams instantaneous win projection.

Make sense?

It's not a full blown Bill James saber metrics approach, which actually caught my interest after watching money ball on late night tv about 5 times.

Back in the day, when I had real lunch times to screw around on, a few guys and myself played out a shortened baseball season using stratomatic cards, one of those fellows actually used our mini season for a masters thesis in stats...

Baseball and stats is a marriage made in heaven, in fact I believe baseballs life blood is its focus on stats. Which is even more fascinating as the fans ebb and flow through fads, like home run chases last decade, pumped up through the use of PEDs, which any sane person knew was behind all the so called "great" hitters.

Yanks pulled the rabbit out of the hat so far though there is plenty of time for them to fall to the predicted. 500 season.

AND... in the "no duh" category

MLB seeks to suspend A-Rod, Braun

Major League Baseball will seek to suspend about 20 players connected to the Miami-area clinic at the heart of an ongoing performance-enhancing drug scandal, including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, possibly within the next few weeks, "Outside the Lines" has learned. If the suspensions are upheld, the performance-enhancing drug scandal would be the largest in American sports history.

[+] EnlargeESPNTony Bosch, right, flat-out denied any knowledge of suspected PED distribution at Biogenesis, his closed South Florida clinic, in an interview with ESPN's Pedro Gomez.

Tony Bosch, founder of the now-shuttered Biogenesis of America, reached an agreement this week to cooperate with MLB's investigation, two sources told "Outside the Lines," giving MLB the ammunition officials believe they need to suspend the players.

One source familiar with the case said the commissioner's office might seek 100-game suspensions for Rodriguez, Braun and other players, the penalty for a second doping offense. The argument, the source said, is the players' connection to Bosch constitutes one offense, and previous statements to MLB officials denying any such connection or the use of PEDs constitute another.

Bob Costas Slams Mets? Celebration; Players Respond On Twitter

'Another Indication Of The Ongoing Decline Of Western Civilization'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? Bob Costas threw a bucket of cold water on the Mets? walk-off win on Father?s Day, calling the team?s celebration an ?indication of the ongoing decline of western civilization.?
The veteran broadcaster, introducing Sunday?s New York-Chicago highlights, warned U.S. Open viewers that the game ?wasn?t exactly a battle of the titans.? But it was his closing line that rankled Mets fans ? and even some players.
?The Mets with four in the bottom of the ninth to win it 4-3, and a team 14 games under .500 celebrates as if it just won the seventh game of the World Series,? Costas said in his sports update during the final-round broadcast of the Open.
?Another indication of the ongoing decline of western civilization,? he added.
His remark didn?t slip past the Flushing faithful. Even retired Mets nemesis Chipper Jones chimed in on Twitter, predicting fans would ?let Bob Costas know about that little comment.?
He was right. Some members of the organization also responded to Costas presumably trying to make a joke at the expense of the team.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Hefner, who was in line for the loss before the comeback, tweeted his message to the broadcaster: ?We will enjoy our wins!?
Mets strength coach Jim Malone called Costas? comments ?a classic example of a non athlete not ?getting it.? ?
Kirk Nieuwenhuis? three-run home run capped Sunday?s ninth-inning rally, giving fans in attendance at Citi Field something to celebrate ? besides Father?s Day.
The Mets and Cubs are a combined 25 games under .500.

Why tweeting on twitter is like chirping on cheeter. What the heck is A-Rod doing! Class act by Girardi, perfect actor in the manager role for the Yankees.

What a big change from the Saturday night Fox broadcast to the ESPN coverage of tonight's game.

Last night, Ken Rosenthal's man crush on the rookie Dodger had me thinking he was ready to give the young man a complimentary, happy ending full body massage.

Tonight, the announcers stuck to the game being broadcast, had lots of pertinent information to the 2 teams playing, and basically showed professionalism in a manner probably not achievable at FSN (Fox Sports Network),

The Yanks are trending down toward my pre-season pct wins, yet because of their hot streak, the pitchers numbers all project toward a 90+ win season.

I think when I moved I got rid of 2 great Ring Lardner sports anthologies..one of which had the episodes of Alibi Ike who, if you've never read up on, is worth looking up

A baseball quote for today
“Although he is a very poor fielder, he is a very poor hitter.”
Ring Lardner quote
