one thing you don't do is a "trout set" by lifting the rod. you are fishing with 20lb test "tippet" in the surf, so when a fish strikes, you point the rod at the fish and PULL back on the line, called a strip-set. Then you can lift the rod, when you do that you are fighting with the entire rod, and sw rods are designed to fight mostly from the butt section. Bottom line is that you can pull any fish in with a fly rod. It's not like a light trout rod at all.

not fly rod guys

Yard Dog is using casting rod, I started playing with spinning rod. super soft tip/slow action. tough to do the John Skinner constant twitch, method with a jig, and you have to exaggerate hook set. I like them because they're light and joy to cast with the right weight line and jig or sinker (I like the Bayacker rig better than bucktail and teaser).

I knew that, but decided to answer the fly rod question anyways

I fish for shad with a 9 foot steelhead rod with 100 yards of 10# braid. Is this similar to your "salmon rod" setup? I'd love to try it out on flatties, striped ones or blues, even, for a lark.

When I tilt the butt of this rod back and let it bend around to almost a "U" shape, I don't think much of any fish can break the line.

Sorry to say i have more rods than time, and at least five Salmon rods My go to out front is a ten foot conventional rated 1/2 to two ounces and has an Abu Record 51 spooled with 12lb Ande Tournament. I can almost empty the spool with 2 ounces and the wind at my a back. When buck tailing I use an 8 1/2 foot conventional 3/8 to 3/4 ounce with an Abu Record 41 spooled with 12lb Ande Tournament. Last week I experimented with an Abu XLT plus with Spiderwire stealth braid. No blow ups but I wasn't as daring as I am with the mono I have tangled with 30lb rays in with this setup, you just need some flat beach with a salmon rod to land anything large.

Happy Anniversary!

Good night of bass fishing last Thursday that started off real slowww and was looking pretty bleak until I trusted my gut and we made a move. We had 2-3 hours of good fishing...not sure exactly how many we caught but I figure somewhere between 15-20 bass on the night. I certainly didn't get quantity myself but made up for it with a healthy 32# bass. We caught two pugnose bass...I can only remember seeing one in the past 10 years and we managed to catch two in one night. Crazy! Starting to wonder if it was the same fish twice or if they were swimming together? (we lost the second one next to the boat because I don't carry a landing net onboard).
