Default How Late Will You Fish Stripers?

No specifics as we don't want to spot burn. But do include your region because fishing does not end in New Brunswick at the same time as Jersey.

Extreme Southern Jersey, I will fish into December. Schoolies the last few years have been available into January. In fact, almost every year it's what you call "social obligations," Frank, that cause me to stop fishing -- it's not a lack of fish.

I make it until about mid November when other affairs completely overtake my life.

Yup "social obligations" do me in...

Boston harbor, usually until the end of October unless the fish seem to have left. Canal, about the second week of November. Rhode Island, through November or until I just give up.

When I was younger I used to surfcast until December in RI. But local hunting became very good, especially deer, so when the moratorium shut down our striper fishing at the same time that hunting got good, I evolved into more hunting. Had I been able to fish commercially the way I had most of my life I would have kept fishing in night cold with snow many nights. But evolutions within me -- age, stopped selling, and enhanced deer hunting -- I got away from late striper fishing. Keep in mind that surfcasting is much more demanding than hunting so with age I choose the easier activity. Were I to have kept making $300 to $1,000 per week and stayed 50 years old I would have never left late season stripering. With a good pair of boots hunting is a sissy activity, perfect for old guys.

One of the nice things about fishing in November after daylight savings is that you can fish in the dark starting at 5pm, and get in a real "night's fishing" after work. In June it doesn't get dark until 9 and you are better off getting up real early to fish the mornings.

People quit fishing way too soon. The list of reasons is a yard long:
They are cold
Christmas shopping
they go hunting
Six months of miffing off their wives creates marital problems
Many think the fish are gone too soon
Nobody fishing sends the "gone" message

I'm in CT and if the weather is like last year and the bait is here, I'll fish until years end and pick up after New Years.

I can believe...and will keep trying...if the water is above 50 degrees. Problem is, I've caught a few at 43 degrees and think they'll keep hitting...
L.I./NY it usually stays near 50 until the first or second week in December...at the beach. Back bays cool faster.

Late fishing, say December on, the fish are still there but the fishing is impossible because of temperatures at night. Any striper fishing available still has to be done at night. After a while it gets stupid at some point.

I just talked to our Maine daughter and she packs it in around October 1. I scold her for quitting too early but what do I know. I think she gets tired, just like the rest of us.

So many of these threads are influenced by life style. For instance, if you live in an area where there are winter over bass, it might not end for you. I have winter over bass only 17 miles away in Providence. You want to roam around the docks in the deep night in a city? Maybe fishing with Hulk Hogan carrying a baseball bat would work.

I fish an area near the MA RI border until the end of October. I agree with Akoller when he says its a good time to be able to fish after dark at 5 or 6 pm, once daylight savings time kicks in.

It does get cold, so I do less wading casting plugs, and more bait fishing, with my rod in a sand spike, and a small fire to sit by. October has been good for some larger stripers for me in the past.

Looking forward to this years fall fishing!

Bob

I mention this every year that the last week in October, and probably the first week in November, stripers pile through the east end of the Canal, usually a fish on every cast.

Bob Marsh also has a point about bait fishing when it gets too cold. Before I got all tangled up in deer hunting, many cold nights we bait fished with the rods silhouetted against distant lights and watched from inside the buggy.

The biggest bass that I have heard of being caught in the canal (60 lbs) was caught on Halloween night on a mackerel chunk. That being said, in my experience September is a more consistent at the canal than October.

Yes, but the bass are not migrating in September. They will bomb through at the end of October/early November. and who knows how late they migrate through, even if the numbers are reduced later.
