You inspired me, Mr. Red Beard. I got myself out on the ice yesterday and had a fine time. Not so exciting as your great fishing hole, but I had a pretty constant level of action and managed to pull 5 nice pickerel and on 30" muskie onto the ice.

I was fishing in Lehigh County, PA on a catch and release lake and had it all to myself, unsurprisingly. The middle of the lake was still wet while my cove had a nice crisp 3.5 inches coverage. The weather was fine if you like cold and windy, which I do, especially with some sunshine mixed in. I did have a nice conversation with the local PA DEP Fishing Warden. He stayed on the shore though, for some reason.

J B, have you ever heard of Franklin Lake up in northern NJ? I learned most of my fishing skills there, both hard and wet water.

Barbosa is different from Barbarossa!

Its a nice honey hole and since its private doesn't get a lot of fishing pressure unlike most other NJ waters. It has a lot of average size bass and pickerel with the occasional better than average size large mouth mixed in.

I've been waiting for us to get a good freeze so I can get enough safe ice to venture out onto some of the bigger/deeper lakes that have more species variety.

I'd love a 30" muskie right now!!! I'm not comfortable going out on 3.5"

I've heard of Franklin Lakes the town but not the lake...just looked it up and I see it does have a lake there and a bunch of other lakes nearby but I've never fished in that area before.

"Barbosa" - got it!

I do love ice fishing!

...but then, I feel just as excited about the start of shad fishing season and then I can't wait for the saltwater action to start.

Mid summer is my only ho hum slack time, though I'm thinking that I probably just need to try a few tweaks to get my fluke skills and night fishing chops up to a better quality...

Ice fishing was red hot this morning.

Ran out of bait by 9:30am (4 dozen shiners)!

Thanks Dave, the perch were defenitly on the feed yesterday. We usually don't catch that many on this lake but I think we had 12 on this short trip (everything released).

I see what you mean about the ice looking thin but I can assure you it was a solid 4.5-5".

I won't go out on anything under 4"

light rain on a lake or no snow til the freeze will cause the lake to have crystal clear ice. used to see that on Lake Nelson that we skated on many times many many years ago.

great catching J!

Fished this morning with my brother and StriperSurf member Basstard. Started off on the "I should have stayed in bed" type of morning but we made it happen in the end.

I don't know why they call him black cloud he brought the sunshine with him today. Absolutely gorgeous weather today!

Measured the ice today 6" in shaded spots and 4.5" in the spots that get more southern sun exposure.
