Exclamation Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament MAY 18th 2014

FYI It's moving to the Sunday before Memorial Day Weekend. I remeber that being the weekend of another tourny

Quote:
The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced that this year's
Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament will be moving from October to May. In 2014
the tournament will be held on Sunday, May 18, at Island Beach State
Park
.

While the tournament date has changed, it still offers an
excellent opportunity to enjoy a fun day of fishing with family and friends.
Funds raised are used to provide the disabled and elderly beach access, surf
fishing instruction programs and equipment, marine education and restoration
efforts, and surf fishing access.

The individual who catches the overall
largest fish wins the "Governor's Award" and has his/her name engraved on the
Governor's Cup which is permanently displayed at the park. Fishing equipment is
awarded to winners who catch the largest fish in a variety of species and age
group categories.

For more information on the tournament, including
"Early Incentive Registration" which saves participants money and time entering
the park on tournament day, visit
http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/news/2014/gsft14.htm on the Division's
website.

Even the STATE acknowledges the fall run has collapsed in NJ

I heard about this a week ago. I could live with it in the first week of October. May 18 is prime.

Well, hey, "our guys" are sponsoring it

The Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament is sponsored by the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and Division of Parks and Forestry, the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, Jersey Coast Anglers Association, and the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association. "

Too late for a letter writing campaign?

Maybe one of these days enough folks will get ticked about tourneys ruining their day?

I hate these 1-2 day super tourneys of all shapes/sizes, no matter the noble cause used as an excuse for them

Look at the bright side, Rob. All the folks who thrive on company when they are fishing will be congregated on IBSP. The rest of the NJ shore will be nearly vacant.

Maybe we could get the lanes closed on the Mathis bridge on May 18th. This would serve as retribution for "bridgegate".

It's just a minor inconvenience for a half day. It is a family oriented outing to get people in to surf fishing. Money raised stays where it was raised.

They say 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the fishermen. The governors tournament is the day you can see the other 90% of the fishermen and find out why.

Wonder why they moved the date? The weather in May can be more unpredictable then October. I can remember cold mornings for the Beating on the Beach and warmer weather in October.

I missed last years but will get the grandkids fired up. Just have to hope the new date does not interfere with their spring sports.

I think they're hoping some real fish get weighed. Early October the past few years has been dismal.

I am thinking that since fishing around Memorial Day weekend is usually good they are hedging their bets. I experience poor fishing in September and October in the area, although I got a nice amount of Kingfish (surprising) in September last year.
