Default Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man

I'm not the only one having a bad day this weekend.

Vice President Dick Cheney shot and wounded a companion during a hunting trip in south Texas on Saturday, the vice president's office said. The wounded man, 78-year-old Harry Whittington, was reported to be alert and in stable condition at a Corpus Christi hospital after being hit by birdshot Saturday afternoon. Whittington, an Austin attorney and Bush-Cheney campaign contribuor, was among a handful of people accompanying the vice president. Cheney is an avid hunter and has taken several previous hunting trips to the south Texas area

Can you imagine what the news stories would look like tomorrow if Kerry had shot a fellow hunter instead of actually bagging a goose?

I'm glad the guy's going to be okay, Cheney doesn't need manslaughter charges on top of everything else coming his way.

Red face Re: Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man

I understand completely how this happened. Quail hunting is a "Texas" thing. It can get a little crazy when a covey or 2 of birds take flight.

I never liked quail hunting very much because the birds are too small for me to see and all the guys I would hunt with consistently bagged more than me even though they were old SOB's in their late 50's.

Nevermind... the press will have their fun. Our local news led with James Brady's quote: ""Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him. I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."

----------------
"The vice president was concerned," said Mary Matalin, a Cheney adviser who spoke with him yesterday morning. "He felt badly, obviously. On the other hand, he was not careless or incautious or violate any of the [rules]. He didn't do anything he wasn't supposed to do."

Except shoot his hunting partner.
Maybe he should have applied his deferments to hunting as well.
LMAO

Well, Matlin said it, but still...

I've only been hunting a few times, but I'm pretty sure that if you shoot someone it's your fault unless the guy is demonstrating suicidal behavior. Your gun, you take responsiblity for where you discharge it. Period.

Sure, accidents happen, but what is it with these guys that they can't own up to the simplest of things like a hunting accident or having met a lobbyist? If we can't trust them to not dodge trivial things, how can we trust them on more weighty matters?

Not true chuck. There are alot of things that people among the hunting party can do to get themselves shot. It sounds like this guy did one of em. A major no-no is to leave the party and then rejoin it without announcing your return. (like walking up behind a flyfisherman unannouned) If you are hunting a fast moving bird like quail or dove it is common to swing around and follow the target. This guy apparently walked up on cheney's side and he never knew he was there.
Thats why they are called accidents. That is why I dont do it. I am a accident magnet.
