Exclamation Thursday, February 13, 2020

There will be a special meeting of the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Stafford Twp. Municipal Building, 260 East Bay Avenue, Manahawkin, NJ 08050.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 pm and is open to the public.

NJ will be making the decision on its 2020 recreational striped bass and bluefish measures, as well as the commercial black sea bass measures.

I never understood why a "GAME FISH" the stripe bass does not hold the same size quota for every state. I coul never comprehend why NY NJ MD, ect all have different regs for the same fish we are all "trying to protect".

Because it's never been about the fish; politics and the special interest groups that get you reelected.

That's because striped bass is a game fish in NJ not those other states. Those other states allow a commercial harvest of striped bass. Not NJ. That's why NJ has the bonus program. For once they give back to the recreational fisherman. A portion of the take that would have gone to the commercial fishing industry is available to a recreational angler.

I went. Was one of the 40-50 guys that could not get in. I think there was 100 or so inside the meeting room, the rest of us out in the hallway. About 5:30 a NJCO came out and told us due to fire laws we could not remain in the hallway but, we could participate in the public comments section of the meeting. "So stand outside, in single file and we would be heard in this order" he went on to give us the meeting agenda= 1st would be seabass, followed by public comment. 2nd- bluefish and public comment; lastly striped bass. And we were ushered outside. Unfortunately, I could not wait around but some friends did, the results are:

Bluefish= 3 fish private anglers; 5 USGC approved for-hire boat anglers

Striped Bass= (pending final ASMFC tech review) 1 @ 28-<38 inches. SBBP (mho ridiculous from day one, NO enforcement) one @ 24 <28 inch with tag.

STRIPER and BLUEFISH REGS SET
At the NJMFC meeting on 2/13/20, the council voted in favor of establishing the following regulations:

BLUEFISH - 3 per person for the private sector and a 5 fish per person limit for the for-hire sector with no size limit and no closed season.

STRIPED BASS - 1 fish at 28" to less than 38". With the bonus tag one fish at 24" less than 28". Additionally, the bonus program will be begin on 5/15 rather than 9/1. It will run through 12/31.

Now, if I go fishing with my buddy on his boat I can keep 3 bluefish, but if I hire my buddy (USCG approved) I can keep 5 bluefish...does than even matter to you if you are considering hiring a boat trip???
