Default Plum Island - Where to fish questions

I have been to Plum Islands hundreds of times because I often go cod fishing on the Captain's Lady which launches out of Plum Island, but I don't know where to fish for Stripers.

Two months ago I drove out after work and did not know where to go. I drove onto plum island. Then took the left and drove to the end where the party boats are. Then if you are facing the party boats I went to the beach that is on the right.

There were a lot of people fishing there and I was able to catch about 20 stripers on clams, but none were even close to keeper size.

I am planning to make the hour drive after work on Wednesday. Where should I go?

When you get off the bridge take your next right at the Plum Island Grill.
That street takes you directly to the refuge.
I suggest you park at either lot 1 or 3 and walk down the boardwalk.
Worms have been taking some nice fish. Good luck and let us know.

It will cost you $5 to get in, but, hopefully you will come out with a keepa.

Sorry to have so many Q's, but are the lots 1+3 clearly marked ( I have never taken a right after crossing the bridge). Do I need a sticker or something or is there an attendant that takes my $5. Will it be open around 8:30-9:00 which is the earliest I can get out there.

The gate closes at sundown.
Yes the lots are clearly marked but you have to beat the sunset.
If you wish to fish at night you need a walk on permit
and that is $10 I think for the season.
There should be a guard but not always.
You do need the overnight sticker to park there at night.

There is a road just before the refuge and at the end of that has an "honor" lot.
You can park there for as long as you want and walk across the street to a path.
You will be very close to the refuge but not technically on it.
Good fishing there too.
Ask all the questions you want, I am glad to help.

Your in for it now.

If my reel is rated to hold 450 yards of 20lb test. What type of line do you recommend. I have had an old reel with 17lb Stren for 10 years, but just got a new reel and it is time for me to upgrade. What line do you recommend. Someone told me to use 30lb fireline?

I think I will leave that up to someone more qualified.
I have always used 20# Stren with good luck.

my biggest one was 26 inches this year, but it has been a hell of a lot of fun.

Getting keepers is part luck, part skill, and a whole lot of getting the timing right. Thus, be prepared to put your time in, and enjoy the small ones - at least you are outside and fishing.

If bagging keepers is all you are interested in, you may need to change your location to one that holds more bigger fish and go there when the trophys are there. Best chances for a lot of big fish consistently at PI are in the river during the herring run, long over now, and even that is highly dependent on locations which change from tide-to-tide and as the season progresses.

Otherwise, get a boat.
