Inside the mind of an ISIS fighter

(CNN) -- To the outside world, they're a force of ruthless yet mysterious insurgents bent on terrorizing civilians and expanding Islamic rule.

But as one former ISIS fighter tells CNN, the mentality goes much deeper.

"The main and principle goal of the Islamic State that they tell their new members is to establish an Islamic state that will encompass the Arab world," the man said in Turkey. "And after that, we go to other countries."

Al-Qaida leader says it has expanded into India

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Al-Qaida has expanded into India, the leader of the terror group said in a video released Thursday, vowing that its militants would bring Islamic law to the entire subcontinent and "wage jihad against its enemies."

At least three Indian states with large Muslim populations have been put on alert in the wake of the video's release, local TV stations reported, though there was no indication of an increased security presence

FBI probing suspect's recent conversion to Islam in Oklahoma beheading

FBI officials are investigating a beheading at an Oklahoma food distribution center after co-workers said the suspect tried to convert them to Islam after his recent conversion.

The alleged suspect, Alton Nolen, 30, was recently fired from Vaughan Foods in Moore prior to Thursday?s attack. Moore Police Department Sgt. Jeremy Lewis told KFOR that Nolen drove to the front of the business and struck a vehicle before walking inside. He then attacked Colleen Hufford, 54, stabbing her several times before severing her head. He also stabbed another woman, 43-year-old Traci Johnson, at the plant.

Lewis said Mark Vaughan, the company?s chief operating officer and a reserve county deputy, shot Nolen as he was stabbing Johnson, who remains hospitalized in stable condition Friday.

America's terror alert system goes silent

WASHINGTON ? Despite threats to the homeland coming from all sides, the Obama administration's terror alert system reportedly has never sent out a single warning to the public.

The National Terrorism Advisory System, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security, was announced in 2011 to replace the old, color-coded system used by the George W. Bush administration.

But Foreign Policy reports that not a single alert, bulletin or advisory has been issued since then. While the NTAS encourages Americans to check its website and other social media links for up-to-date information about threats in specific places or activities, no reports have ever been posted to their website, Twitter or Facebook page.

This, despite the heightened tensions in just the last few months over the rise of the Islamic State -- including beheadings of American journalists carried out by the group, and warnings that U.S. passport-carrying men and women are pledging their allegiance.

Under the George W. Bush administration, the five-colored terror ranking system was frequently employed -- but eventually turned into late night TV fodder. A makeover was called for and the complex color-coded system was replaced by a simpler two-tiered system. An "Imminent Threat Alert" is supposed to be issued when there is a specific and impending terrorist threat against America. The second tier warning is called an "Elevated Threat Alert."

"Something has been replaced with nothing," Michael O?Hanlon, a national security expert at the Brookings Institution, told FP. "Whether the Bush model was bad enough that this represents a net improvement can be debated. However, it does feel like the government still hasn?t figured out how to communicate with citizens about possible dangers, or the need for vigilance."

Daniel Byman, a professor in security studies at Georgetown University, told Foreign Policy that the old system had its flaws, too, and at times became "background noise."

He added," They did little to inform the public of the nuances of the threat."

Source: Air Force father, son targeted online by ISIS followers

The Facebook pages of an Air Force servicemember and his son were ?swarmed? by offensive messages after Islamic State sympathizers urged followers to target them online, a source tells Fox News ? a virtual attack that coincided with an Army bulletin warning ISIS may try to track down military families on social media.

The Army intelligence bulletin, obtained by Fox News, had warned that Islamic State militants were calling on supporters to scour social media for addresses of U.S. military family members and ?show up [at their homes] and slaughter them." The assessment urged U.S. military personnel to be vigilant.

A counterterrorism source described to Fox News how one military family was targeted around the same time.

The source said that in late September, Islamic State sympathizers harassed an Air Force member who had posted pictures on Facebook from a flight over Iraq during a recent bombing campaign.

The source, who is familiar with the incident, said ISIS found the servicemember?s social media profile, and then linked it to his son?s Facebook account. The son is believed to be in his early teens.

The Facebook pages were then "swarmed" with derogatory messages such as kafir, or non-believer, in an online flash-mob-style attack.

"This is the real deal," the counterterrorism source said, referring to the posts. "They want to find them [U.S. military], raise their profile, in the eyes of a potential 'lone wolf.'"

The militants apparently encouraged others to join in the digital harassment.
A post on one ISIS-linked Twitter account, translated for Fox News, said: ?We have a raid on an American pilot account at 9:00 evening Mecca time who is participating in the crusaders? bombing. Retweet this if you are ready to be part of the raid

The father and son were not identified to Fox News for security reasons.
Fox News is told that the Department of Defense became aware of the incident, and shortly afterward, both Facebook accounts went dark.

The counterterrorism source said the incident is in line with the recent threat assessment from the Army?s Threat Integration Center that was released in late September. The bulletin warned Army commands worldwide that servicemembers should limit the number of people with access to their social media profiles after ISIS called on its supporters to use the Yellow Pages and Facebook to track down addresses.

While there was no independent intelligence to corroborate the warning in the Army bulletin, the source said ?ISIS wanted to find these guys, and inspire someone to go after these guys.?

The Army said in a written statement that protection levels at installations ?have not changed.?

?This document is a reminder to stay vigilant,? the Army said. ?It provides renewed emphasis on force protection measures to ensure the safety and security of our DOD components, defense critical infrastructure, personnel and communities.?

After Fox News reported on the bulletin last week, the assessment has been more widely circulated, including among an association of retired Marine Corps and Navy investigators

now stop it. The Prez says these are not Islamic terrorists. They are terrorists and despite what the "I" in ISIS stands for, they are not Islamist. The Ft Hood shootings were "workplace violence" I got Bin Laden...even though it was our military and Intelligence people who got him and even though they had been looking since 9/12/01..it was me and post-Bin Laden there are no Islamist terrorists. Why..because its on my watch and I say so. If you voted for him you got what you wanted

Islamist militants take hostages in Sydney cafe, display black jihadist flag

A police operation is underway at a caf? in central Sydney, where up to 40 hostages are being held by unknown attackers and a black jihadist flag can be seen. It comes amid Australia?s backing of the US-led operation against the Islamic State.

A senior Lindt Australia official said 10 staff and up to 30 customers could be held inside the Lindt chocolate caf? in Martin Place. There were ?probably 30 customers? at the time of the attack, Sky Business quoted Lindt Australia Chief Executive Steve Loane. There was no immediate confirmation of the exact number of assailants.

The area surrounding the cafe has been sealed off by armed police, and Australian authorities have cleared airspace over central Sydney to make way for police helicopters.

?A police operation is underway in Martin Place, Sydney?s CBD. People are advised to avoid the area,? New South Wales (NSW) police tweeted.

Meanwhile, live TV footage showed people standing inside a caf? with their hands pressed against the windows. At least one of the attackers was caught on camera wearing a traditional Islamic cap.

High School: Islamic vocabulary lesson part of Common Core standards

Parents in Farmville, North Carolina want to know why their children were given a Common Core vocabulary assignment in an English class that promoted the Prophet Muhammad and the Islamic faith.
?It really caught me off guard,? a Farmville Central High School student who was in the class told me. ?If we are not allowed to talk about any other religions in school ? how is this appropriat

The Islamic vocabulary worksheet was assigned to seniors.

?I was reading it and it caught me off guard,? the student told me. ?I just looked at it and knew something was not right ? so I emailed the pages to my mom.?
"I asked the school district to provide me with a copy of vocabulary worksheets that promoted the Jewish, Hindu and Christian faiths. The school district did not reply."
?In the following exercises, you will have the opportunity to expand your vocabulary by reading about Muhammad and the Islamic word,? the worksheet read.
The lesson used words like astute, conducive, erratic, mosque, pastoral, and zenith in sentences about the Islamic faith.
?The zenith of any Muslim?s life is a trip to Mecca,? one sentence read. For ?erratic,? the lesson included this statement: ?The responses to Muhammad?s teachings were at first erratic. Some people responded favorably, while other resisted his claim that ?there is no God but Allah and Muhammad his Prophet.?
Another section required students to complete a sentence:
?There are such vast numbers of people who are anxious to spread the Muslim faith that it would be impossible to give a(n)___ amount.?
I spoke to one parent who asked not to be identified. She was extremely troubled by what her child was exposed to in the classroom.
?What if right after Pearl Harbor our educational system was talking about how great the Japanese emperor was?? the parent asked. ?What if during the Cold War our educational system was telling students how wonderful Russia was??
The parent said the material was classwork disguised as Islamic propaganda

At least 12 dead in Islamist terror attack at satirical French publication

Black-clad gunmen shouting "Allahu Akbar!" stormed the Paris offices of a satirical publication known for lampooning Islam Wednesday, killing 12 and injuring as many as 15 before escaping, French officials said.

As many as three Kalashnikov-toting shooters were being sought following the 11:30 a.m. attack at Charlie Hebdo, the publication known for challenging Muslim terrorists with a 2011 caricature of Prophet Muhammed on its cover and which recently tweeted a cartoon of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Two policemen and several journalists - including the cartoonist behind the weekly publication's provocative images, were among the dead.

?We?ve avenged the honor of the prophet!? the killers shouted, according to witnesses who spoke to Sky News. Other witnesses said the men shouted "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is great." The gunmen spoke French without any accent, according to Le Monde.

?We?ve avenged the honor of the prophet!?

The gunmen fled in a stolen car, and may have quickly ditched it and disappeared into the French capital's subway system, according to reports. A pedestrian was injured by the terrorist?s vehicle, and there has been a second shootout, according to Le Figaro.

French President Francois Hollande branded the attack an act of terrorism and claimed that several other potential terror attacks had been thwarted "in recent weeks." Hollande added that the publication had been threatened in the past and was already under police protection and surveillance.

?This is a terrorist attack, there is no doubt about it,? Hollande told reporters.

He needs to get his head out of his a$$.

Howard Dean: Paris attackers not "Muslim terrorists"

Former Democratic Party head Howard Dean objected to calling the shooters in the Paris attack "Muslim terrorists," though the attackers were witnessed shouting "Allahu akbar" as they fired.
Dean, speaking Wednesday on MSNBC, argued that they should be treated as "mass murderers" instead.

"I stopped calling these people Muslim terrorists. They're about as Muslim as I am," he said. "I mean, they have no respect for anybody else's life, that's not what the Koran says. And, you know Europe has an enormous radical problem. ... I think ISIS is a cult. Not an Islamic cult. I think it's a cult."

The journalists targeted in Wednesday's attack worked for a satirical publication known for lampooning the Prophet Muhammad. A video shot from nearby captured one attacker shouting in French that they had "avenged" the prophet.

Dean, a former Vermont governor and presidential candidate, said they still should not be accorded any "particular religious respect ... whatever they're claiming their motivation is, is clearly a twisted, cultish mind."

Dean is hardly the first public figure to try and separate modern-day Muslim extremists from the religion of Islam. In September, Secretary of State John Kerry insisted during a congressional hearing that the Islamic State does "not represent Islam."

He called them a "militant cult masquerading as a religious movement." After using the phrase "Islamic radical groups," he immediately corrected himself. "Islamic is the wrong word -- radical religious extremists," he clarified.

While Obama and top officials in his administration referred to the Paris attack Wednesday as terrorism, they generally did not use the term Islamic terrorism.

But Steve Emerson, director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, criticized officials for avoiding the term.

"The bottom line here, these are Islamic terrorist attacks and need to be called as such," he told Fox News on Wednesday.
