Default Damn Yankee...

Well folks, this Damn Yankee will be moving to SC soon, Myrtle Beach area. Checked out the piers around the area, and dont really care for pier fishing. Looks tough for surf casting, and from what I saw on the piers, gonna be a little lean for anything of size. Any help?

Have to wait till Debs foot surgery is healed (getting operated on the 13th), so probably sometime in May.
And Jess, the pier isn't that bad, I actually walked it out to the end...

no idea about what's "normal" down there, but I did watch a school of blues blitzing the surf one August... off the beach a bit too far for surfcasting but probably they'd swing by the pier from time to time.

also don't forget night sharking

I have a feeling you will bump into Jersey people after you settle in. They will clue you in as to the local techniques. Walk around the pier with something "Jersey" on.

Rags,

If you want to get into a very fun fishery you could team up with someone to get you onto skinny water red drum fishing. I know taht it is not your gig --- but a flat bottom boat would serve you well in that area and give your boy something to play with when he visits.

You also have wicked cobia if you know where and how to get onto them. The beaches tend to be long and very gradual slopes (good for minimizing erosion) and finding structure can be a challenge. You will find plenty of friendly and helpful folks. Even though the area is loaded with damned yankees --- even they become more civilized when transplanted to southern shores!!

Cheers,

Al

I vacation on the south facing NC beaches, been to Ocean Island, Holden, Oak Island. Also Topsail and Nags Head, but they are different kinds of beaches up there. At the south beaches, I fish for spot with a small rod, then use the head only, like bunker. Another method would be using a Owen Lupton drum rig with a live finger mullet, just let it roll around, it will catch something. Also fish the passes (inlet), most movey water. Well, you prolly already know most of that stuff...

I always go there when the water is hot enough to poach an egg. Usually not skunk but close. I will be in Holden the week after the 4th holiday, can't wait, so don't catch them all.

Good luck, Dave S
