Re: Athlete Of The Year
sorry, I disagree.
it's like calling Dale Earnhardt's car "athlete of the year"
yes, in horse racing this was a special horse, with historic wins.
but "athlete of the year" ... no

Re: Athlete Of The Year
The Associated Press Athlete Of the Year Award does consider (vote for) them Athletes.
My favorite Horse of all time (Zenyatta) finished as the runner up twice in the Women's category. In 2009 Serena Williams headed her for the win and in 2010 Lindsey Vonn nosed her for the win.
I would be surprised if this year the male category is not won by this Horse.

Re: Athlete Of The Year
Doug,
I understand, but I do not, never have.
Great animals? Yes, and interesting how the trainer and jockey determine the horse, competition, track etc to put together a great race. The horse just does what it is created and trained to do, given its ability and bred disposition.
Completely different than comparison to human athletes.

Re: Athlete Of The Year
A quote I read in a article.
You can debate whether or a horse is an athlete, or whether a thoroughbred even knows it?s racing. You can talk about how horse racing is dead and not even the biggest victory in a quarter-century will be enough to give it a brief revival. You can acknowledge that horse racing is just a novelty that only gains the interest of the public a few times per year, like boxing or the 100-meter dash, or swimming. But what you can?t argue is this: American Pharoah is the athlete of the year.
The reason?
American Pharoah is the first thoroughbred to win horse racing?s Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978, going wire-to-wire at the Belmont Stakes (just the second time that?s been done in 30 years) to make history. And anytime you?ve accomplished something in any athletic endeavor that hasn?t been accomplished in 37 years, you?re the king of sport, whether you spend your nights in a stable or not.

Re: Athlete Of The Year
I read that, and completely disagree.
It's an event and accomplishment for the breeder, trainer, jockey and owner.
It's a great horse.
It is not the "athlete of the year".
Tongue-sticking out and nose clenched against the sensationalist media.

Re: Athlete Of The Year
"you've" accomplished.
the horse? phooey, it did what it was bred, trained, and jockeyed to do.
yes, it has the disposition, is a great, even historic, animal.
still: not the athlete of the year.
edit: there really is no debate about it. it's just the media and no matter what, it ain't the athlete of the year

Re: Athlete Of The Year
Joe, never saw Rocky III or IV... I think I barely watched all of II
Hey, apparently horsin' type people seriously think of these horses as "athletes"... guess it's just like some thinking of their pets as, or really more than, people.
I'm just expressing my dislike for the notion. Not to take anything away from the accomplishment of American Pharaoh... I just look at it like a team's, specifically the human team's, not the individual horse's, accomplishment.
