Billboard magnate pours fortune into unusual single-handed effort for Trump

Story highlights
Stephen Adams is spending over $650,00 to boost Donald Trump's campaign
Adams is buying his own company's billboards in critical swing states to promote Trump

Washington (CNN) ? A billionaire backing Donald Trump is taking advertising into his own hands.

Stephen Adams, a billboard magnate who made his fortune in a half-dozen different business ventures over the last five decades, is pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into a pro-Trump campaign. Yet it is not the Trump campaign or a Trump super PAC that is spending over $650,000 to boost the Republican nominee -- it is Adams himself, who his buying his own billboards in a set of swing states.

It is an unusual purchase and a throwback to a previous era when the wealthy had close to unfettered control over how their dollars were spent. Adams disclosed the spending this week in independent expenditure reports almost always filed by political action committees or nonprofits, rather than individuals: $150,000 in North Carolina, $200,000 in Pennsylvania and $300,000 in Michigan.

That is not a trivial amount of money, given the long struggles of Trump high-dollar efforts. If donated to a PAC -- staffed by professional operatives and fundraisers -- Adams would instantly become one of Trump's top donors.

But Adams is hanging a shingle.

"Mr. Adams is a long-time supporter of, and contributor to, the Republican Party," said an Adams aide, Rich Zecchino. "He has contributed these advertisements to the presidential campaign in furtherance of that historical support."

The digital billboards produced by his company, Adams Outdoor Advertising, are not flashy, with simple white text reading "For the people" overlayed on a navy background accompanied with an American flag. The bottom reads "Trump Pence 2016" in bold.

And it is not the first time that Adams has gone outside the normal campaign finance system to support his chosen candidate. A Republican donor for decades, Adams financed similar billboard campaigns in 2000 and 2004, federal election records show, spending $1 million each cycle in order, when asked on federal forms for the purpose of his independent expenditure, "to win election."

The closest comparison in this cycle? Jeb Bush top donor Miguel Fernandez -- who despite giving millions to Bush's super PAC -- chose to buy $40,000 of his own ads in swing-state newspapers to bash Trump.

That's not surprising, you didn't expect the police to support a candidate that should be under indictment, did you?

Trump: 'This Will Be the Last Election that the Republicans Have a Chance of Winning'

09-09-2016
David Brody

In an exclusive interview with The Brody File, Donald Trump says if he doesn't win in November, Republicans will never win another election because Hillary Clinton will make sure illegal immigrants get citizenship.

"This will be the last election that the Republicans have a chance of winning," Trump tells us from backstage at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., on Friday. "You?re going to have people flowing across the border, you're going to have illegal immigrants coming in and they're going to be legalized and they're going to be able to vote and once that all happens you can forget it."

Black voters are turning from Clinton to Trump in new poll

Donald Trump is gaining support among African-American voters ? whose enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton is eroding, a tracking poll released Saturday revealed.

Trump saw a 16.5 percentage-point increase in backing from African-American voters in a Los Angeles Times/University of Southern California tracking poll, up from 3.1 percent on Sept. 10 to 19.6 percent through Friday.

Meanwhile, the same poll showed Clinton?s support among that group plummeting from 90.4 percent on Sept. 10 to 71.4 percent.

Clinton?s nearly 20-point crash began Sunday, said Dan Schnur of USC. Sunday was the day Clinton was recorded collapsing while entering a Secret Service van at a 9/11 event.

The survey, which spanned through Friday, included the days in which Trump reignited the divisive ?birther? issue ? which critics contend is a thinly veiled attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the country?s first black president.
Late Wednesday, Trump had refused to acknowledge that President Obama was born in the United States, demurring on the topic in a Washington Post interview published the next day.

But at a bizarre press conference at Trump International, his new Xhotel in Washington, DC, on Friday, the tycoon conceded, ?President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.?

For the week, the poll found a 6-point rise for Trump. The Republican is now at 47.2 percent of the vote to Clinton?s 41.2 percent.

?It?s the largest shift we?ve seen in a one-week period since we began polling in July,? Schnur said.

Frank Luntz: How Donald Trump Can Defeat Hillary Clinton in the First Debate

Apologize and attack

Mr. Trump:

I'll be blunt. Never before have expectations been lower and the stakes higher for a presidential debate candidate than they are for you. The good news: everyone expects you to stumble ? even some of the people preparing you for your debate. Your mission now is to move from prosecutor to presidential. Righteous indignation will be appropriate at times, but not all the time. You can't be the same guy who ridiculed your Republican opponents. That's not what undecided voters want to hear. Americans know you represent change. This debate is the chance to prove that you can make it happen ? and your opponent? can't.

Before I get to specific language, let's discuss tone. Whether they love you, hate you, or are still looking for a reason to vote for you, everyone wants to tune in to hear what you have to say. So as you walk on the stage, consider this: you do not need to shock with spectacle. You need to surprise with sincerity. Be the voice of the forgotten, hardworking taxpayer that has been ignored and betrayed by Washington. Allow me to be blunt: if you fall back on your old habits from the Republican debates and your off-script, off-the-cuff, off-the-rails personal insults from the campaign trail, you will alienate the cautious, concerned non-Republican voters you need.

Online Polls Show Overwhelming Winner Of First Presidential Debate

Trump came out on top over Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at 67 percent to 33 percent according to CNBC

According to Time, Trump was the winner at 55 percent over Clinton’s 45 percent.

Trump won hands down,? commented Brian Earl on CNBC?s poll. ?Not in the debate itself but after. He did well in the first half of the debate, lost a little in the second half, but after it was over Hillary vacated so fast the camera man was running trying to keep up. Trump stayed with his wife and daughter and answered questions for a good 20 minutes. He also referenced a Clinton (ad) on the birther issue. CNN pulled up the Wolf (Blitzer) clip and proved she was (lying).?

Others saw the candidates? performance as a window to their character.

?Hillary looked smug during the entire debate, and she has a fake smile,? commented Kendoaz. ?I give her credit for not falling over and lasting 90 minutes. Hillary looked fake, had prepared lines and did good remembering them, but we don?t want fake we want the truth. I?m tired of politicians BS and Trump just delivers well. With Trump it looks like it comes from the heart, not a paid political junkie. I bet the next debate Trump will be on the attack more, he let her off the hook a few times.?

Many viewers found there to be a heavy hand of bias in the debate.

“Where was the discussion about illegal immigration? That’s the number 1 issue in the election. Where was the discussion about radical islamic terrorism? That’s the number 2 issue in the election. Hillary and the 3rd debater, Lester Holt, spent most of the time trying to play “gotcha” with Donald Trump,” commented Tom Johnson. “Holt tried to rebut Trump 41 times. He only followed up with Hilary 7 times. Hilary came across as a smug, pompous insider politician. Trump came across as a leader.”

Others felt the media bias was present during the post-debate spin cycle.

“What was pathetic was the spin room reporters of ABC, NBC and CBS immediately after the debate. My God those people have no shame and ran to tell us all how bad Trump did, how Trump failed, never saying any bad about Secretary Clinton’s performance. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at anything the media does this cycle, but it was sickening to watch,” commented Rockerfeller
Fox News, in fact, noted that online polls showed Trump largely being cited as the winner, but the media analysis of the debate largely gave the victory to Clinton.

Trump himself gave Clinton a grade of C+ for her performance.

“I thought she was very bad in the first half when they were asking normal questions,” he said, “and when they were asking bad questions she did better.”

Trump said he had planned to hit the Democratic nominee on her husband Bill Clinton’s infidelities but in the end could not bring himself to do so in front of their daughter, Chelsea Clinton. “See, I do have a heart,” he said.
