Default White Perch in Toms River?

I've never fished for White Perch, but have put them on my list to learn about and to try to catch. I was checking out an ice fishing video from a guy down in Maryland on a river just above Annapolis and he was jigging White Perch with great luck. This leads me to believe that they are active and could be caught on spinning tackle any time now. In fact, it looks like they will just become more and more catchable as the winter ends.
I'd like to try someplace relatively close (coming from Princeton) and was looking at some of the smaller estuaries around Toms River. Does anyone have any recommendations for tactics, timing or areas to try?
Thanks!

No idea about their presence in Toms River, but our local brackish/fresh waters have them in South Jersey (which is defined as South of Manahawkin for this purpose )

blood worm, sheepshead minnow or grass shrimp (the last two seined/netted from local waters) are used.

fresh water tackle, find an accessible hole, cut, whatever other than a shallow mud flat and you might find them schooled up.

Thanks Rob!
I will be exploring the White Perch fishery soon, I think. I'm getting very itchy to smell salt water again.

btw, right now if you explore the dock pilings with a long handled dip net, you have a shot of collecting your own grass shrimp and/or sheepshead minnows... just saying.

then again, local tackle shops carry them down here, so perhaps a call will find a shop near you that carries them, plus any possible reports of activity.

just never heard much about white perch when I was up in MoCo but that doesn't mean they aren't around somewhere, either.

I see there's a bait shop right in the heart of Toms River that I'd never heard of called Cap't. Hippo's. I'll give them a call to see if there's anything doing like I'm hoping for.

Your best bet for white perch are the Wading river and the Mullica river. They have fresh water infusion, more so than the Toms River. My favorite is the Wading river as you don't need a boat and can fish from some of the bridge crossings along its length.

Thanks Yarddog!
I'm not familiar with that neighborhood, but on GoogleEarth it looks like there might be accessible fishing spots in the area of the marinas by where Rte.9 and the GSP cross. Do you think that area is worth an exploration?

Folks use to fish for perch in the Toms River in the area just east of the old stone bridge going from TR to Beachwood. Some fished the bulkhead of the park there as well as some used boats to get into the deeper water. There is a big cove there and the perch use to hang in there. We also use to drift worms for small bass there too.
