I was out hard water fishing last Friday (technically a 2017 report, then.) Managed 1 muskie, 2 pickerel, 2 largemouth and a couple bait-sized perch.

But I'm still dreaming of getting out to the beach if only for bothering some rats. Foolish me!

Does anyone think any stripers are hanging around?

I went out in unlikely cold just to smell the salt last winter near Belmar and caught a, well, sub-rat... a "mouse?" on a bucktail. We were both pretty shocked.

Happy New Year!

Any size to the muskie?

I wouldn't be shocked if guys continue to pick at small 12-18" bass in the surf (if anyone is dedicated enough to keep fishing it). That size class doesn't migrate and I doubt very many are left in the bay since most of the bays are now iced over except RB...ocean side should have the warmest water or deep water spots in the Hudson which is off limits until 3/1 again.

A little New Year's Eve clamming.

Glad we brought the pickaxe as we needed to break through 3" of ice.

Residential stripers are around all year . In almost every larger river in NJ NY
Do you want to go to Connecticut to find them ? Know a guy who catches them all year long .

The muskie was about 35 inches and very healthy. I got it back into the water as quickly as I could so it's fins wouldn't freeze. One pickerel was almost 30".

There's something very cool to standing on perfectly clear ice and having a toothy monster thrashing around just under my feet!

The lake is near the little town of Wanamakers and is C&R only except for the trout they stock.

I'm on my way there again today to take advantage of relatively good weather and a slow time at work.

As far as the beach goes, I will likely wait for a little milder weather and head over a couple times before spring arrives and this young man's thoughts turn to shad fishing. I also aspire to find a place to catch white perch this spring, maybe around Toms River. I've never caught them except in a seine net.

as long as they don't see you with a snag hook, you're probably ok.

such as the ice fishers at Collins Cover this weekend.

just don't try to drag them off the ice with ya.

Good day on the ice. I had modest to slow action all day, but I was so glad to have gotten out. The sun was brilliant and the wind almost at zero. The lake was so quiet I could hear squirrels running through the trees 100 yards away. Just as I decided to pack up a 4 lb bass came along and then with 3 tip ups left I caught my biggest fish ever through the ice, a 44" muskie. I took a pic but I don't know how to load it from my phone.

Joseph,

Just browse here from the phone, click "go advanced" then scroll down and click "manage attachments" ... from there you can upload the photo directly from the phone.

That "spot" in CT is frozen over and I even seen a picture of someone jigging a striper through the ice there. Not gonna lie that has me a little excited. lol
