Question 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

What do you think? Looks to me like they tried to make it "rounder" like a Lexus or a BMW. The back end does look like a BMW. Right now I do NOT like it, but in a year I'll probably change my mind. Woa... front end collision would be a real mess and it appears that once again you can't mount a rod rack/cooler unit on the front end. Damn!

I haven't liked the last 2 (including this one) revisions of the Grand Cherokee. My daughter drives an '02 which I do like.

Front end collision in all recent vehicles is a mess, particularly with crumple zones and integrated frames... these are designed to maximize the mess to reduce the energy transferred to the passenger compartment. It really does work (as my son was involved in 2 front end accidents, one at 70+ mph (edit: it was likely closer to 80), and walked away with minor scratches from both, that wasn't a jeep but rather a Chrysler PT Cruiser...yes both times) but at the sacrifice of mucho body work on "fender benders".

The Grand Cherokee was featured on the PBS show "MotorWeek" this past week,
#2944. They seemed to like it... Top end in the $ 40's. Nice!

two things I don't like:

1. the generic soccer-mom-ness rear-end:

and

2. the apparent wimpy fog lamps:

The lamps look way undersized for serious use. I'd be curious to know if this is still "trail rated"

That review was better than I expected, surprised to read that the vehicle is actually bigger. I'm a bit confused with all the "Quadra" options but realize that it basically means +++$$$$$

this particularly soured me:

"well integrated lift gate-spoiler".

I can guarantee that this vehicle will not be in my garage anytime soon.

I'm looking to stay compact, if anything perhaps a Ford Escape sized vehicle, for which I'm in the market. Must be 4WD, no AWD allowed (except as a trans-mode... such as the Jeep GC's "full time" vs. "part time" 4WD... the "full time" allows AWD type driving on road, ie slip differential or whatever it's called)

Well, I wouldn't turn one down if someone offered it to me, but I got a look at one driving on the road, and it's just about as disappointing in person as the picture above leads me to believe.

Don't get me wrong: a fine, brand new vehicle, but I'm still partial to the 2002-2004/5 vintage Grand Cherokee look, as opposed to the boxy later models and the current one.

I've seen them coming through with Mercedes Benz transmission in some of them.
That will jack up the price for sure.

How about cj6's, I was thinking of those?

The 2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo starts at $30,995 in 4x2 form, and $32,995 as a 4X4

That's ridiculous, they are pricing themselves out of the "off-road" buyers market but maybe their main market share now is "Yuppie Shopping Mall" drivers.
