Belmar area

Good afternoon all. Next week my girlfriend and I will be making a day trip just for some surf fishing. We aren't too particular on what we catch, we wouldn't mind some blues or fluke though. Looking at the belmar area. We've never fished there before. I just ordered some new tackle. She is a bait and wait kind of girl. I want to try some new things. I have a few deadly dicks, some pencil poppers, 2 packs of gulp (pumpkin seed and chartreuse, both 3"), some spro jigs, and a few other things. Amy advice as to what might be better or worse? We're thinking of leaving our house in the poconos early enough to get there around 430 right around low tide.

Not sure how much access you will have to bait and wait during the day - you will need to purchase beach tags.

You might want to consider going to Sandy Hook instead - you will have areas to fish there at least

Best bet is to use that gulp for flounder

not sure you need tags to access either jetty.... and at any rate, I think pockets around rocks have been working lately.

one thing for fluke, Dave, read up the reports threads here and make sure you don't do too much "wait" on the bait and wait thing... generally a slow retrieve, pauses, and a teaser in front of a bucktail ( or even just letting a standard surf "fluke rig" flutter around s l o w l y) will yield more than just casting and letting anything sit there... for fluke!

I haven't heard of any, but there might be croakers around... it's that time of year. There bait and wait with clam on 1/0 or even smaller, circle hooks might work.

Lastly, using cut fish or squid bait might yield some blues... they are making appearances again.

Thanks guys! I don't do the bait and wait, I prefer to be moving. She doesn't care what she catches, she mainly goes just to sit on the beach and relax. We'll be there early enough to not need the beach tags and should be out (probably 1030-11) before they start checking.

Enjoy, if it was a month for now, I'd tell you to pick up some mullet and mullet rigs for guaranteed blues: cocktails or better. But right now, you have to hunt for things... though getting there at sunup might yield some surprises... ya never know... and definitely will avoid the crowds

Let us know how you make out... I miss Belmar and north.

At this time of year, bait and wait will get you mostly skates and sand sharks. And during the day, you are going to have people swimming all around your poles - not the best way to fish.

Your best bet is to go early morning or in the evenings.

Generally any beach that you have to have a tag will toss you for fishing once the guards come on duty.
Get there at first light, watch were you park so you don't get towed or ticketed and you will have 3 to 4 hours before you have to leave.

I do admit to doing mostly night patrol in that area, though I wonder if those are "relatively" new... as in the past 10 years... I don't recall ever seeing them.

After further thought I think we're going to go to sandy hook instead. Maybe stop at keansburg pier on the way home and do some crabbing. Do I have to pay the $50 fee just for 1 day or is there a daily rate?

Is this true during the off season?
I have never been to SRI but was looking to go on my next day trip sometime during the first week of Nov.
I assume this time of year there is no lifeguard on duty so tags are not needed.

No badges this time of year. Also I have never seen anyone checking badges of people on the rocks. There is no badge checker on the Belmar past the fisherman club. Also on the Avon side you have to walk around the boardwalk to get to jetty.
