Fake and phony catches are all over the place. That is what we have to watch out for. Notice there are no 48 and 49 pounders. Why is that?

Actually a friend of mine weighed in a 47 yesterday - I figured you didn't want it.

Caught Wednesday night off Leonardo

But you're right - a 48/49 pound bass is the rarest fish in the sea

Its all good copy. Inasmuch as we are a striper site, our members enjoy that stuff. Wait until you are 80. A high forties will be a World Record! To think we used to fill the buggy with 40s. As a weighmaster I used to take one look at a mid-40-pound and come within a pound without a scale. You could see 100 forties before you saw a 50. I have no lifetime count of 40 pound plus fish; no big deal. Keep your eyes open for "fifties". Its what I don't pay you for.

The last time we had this many "fifties" prior to June 1 was 2012 when there was eleven.

Hi Frank - Rivers end has a pic one hanging on the scale that was just over 50 (50.25) posted on their Facebook page on 5/21. They didn't post the anglers name but based on the comments looks like his name might be Michael Chaponis.

Thanks, I put him down on the Fifties List. If that name comes up again, I won't list it. Members, do watch for surf fish because I keep those listed with distinction because we only have a couple per year. You are not going to see more than one fifty by the same surfcaster. Its only happened once in the history of the striper surf.

It shows you know what I have been teaching, Andrew. For our other readers the first 50s are 21 years old which would explain an increase in numbers. Assuming that it is that simple. It is a starting point in analysis.

My friend and fellow Staten Island Tuna Club member Rob Crocitto had a great night on his boat, the Bunker Box. Rob weighed in a 62.45 pound striper while Ben Fiorello who was along for the trip weighed in a 55 pound fish.

Rob's fish was 52 inches to the fork.

Both fish weighed on an igfa certified scale, on land.

And I'll tell you this: Rob works his @$$ off and fishes hard, and does a ton of charity work. The man earned this fish.

weighed in at the old Michael's B&T on Mansion Avenue in Great Kills - the shop has a new name
